Last term, our Level 2 Hairdressing students took part in a hair matting enrichment session, where they created artistic designs using specialist hair matting techniques to further develop their skills and gain a deeper understanding of the versatility of hair.
To produce designs using hair matting techniques, hair is first cut into small pieces and carefully laid onto a mat. It is then sprayed with hairspray and dried in place, creating a fabric-like material made entirely from hair. This material can be moulded and cut into a variety of shapes to form a wide range of creative items. During the session, students produced handbags, extravagant headdresses and other artistic designs that showcased their newly developed skills.
Participating in the hair matting workshop provided students with a valuable opportunity to enhance both their technical ability and professional confidence. The session encouraged creativity and experimentation beyond traditional salon styles, enabling students to refine their control, precision and understanding of texture, structure and effective product use.
The activity also helped prepare students for future careers in hairdressing by developing their independence, adaptability and resilience throughout the creative process. These essential skills are vital in the hairdressing industry, where professionals must respond to diverse client needs and evolving industry trends. Engaging in non-standard activities such as this challenges learners’ patience, encourages innovation and supports them in standing out within the industry.
Hannah Prior, Hair & Barbering Lecturer at Weston College, added, “Workshops like this are a great way for students to step away from traditional hairdressing techniques and gain a greater appreciation of just how versatile hairdressing can be. Whether students aspire to work in a salon or pursue a more artistic and creative pathway, this task prepares them for a range of career opportunities and broadens their future prospects.”
A big well done to the Hairdressing students for their hard work and creativity in producing such innovative designs throughout this project.

Last term, our Education and Early Years students hosted a sensory workshop for our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) students, creating a range of hands-on and creative activities for them to enjoy.
This was a great way for our learners to organise an event that was accessible, inclusive, and fun. Students catered for individual needs, set up a wide range of activities, and assisted each learner to ensure they got the most out of the session. These activities included slime-making, a painting station, paper chain building, and a sensory flour session.
Holding a sensory, creative and hands-on workshop where Early Years students work alongside SEND students offers benefits for both groups. For early years students, leading and participating in activities that must be adapted to different needs builds confidence in their own abilities, as they learn different ways to communicate, teach and play. They develop adaptability while gaining a deeper understanding of inclusion, empathy and diverse learning styles.
Meanwhile for our SEND students, these workshops provide engaging and interactive experiences that support communication, sensory regulation and self-expression in a supportive and social environment.
This collaboration is important because it nurtures inclusive attitudes early on, improves social confidence for all learners, and builds a sense of community between learners. Not only this, our Early Years students have also gained essential and transferrable skills for future learning and professional practice to progress their career in the industry.
A huge well done to our students for organising such a seamless and inclusive event.

Airbus and Weston College Group today announced the signing of a formal lease agreement for the new Aerospace Skills Academy at Airbus’ Filton site, marking a major milestone in strengthening national resilience through aerospace and advanced engineering skills.
Under the agreement, Weston College Group will transform a building on the Filton site into a new training facility dedicated to advanced manufacturing and engineering skills. The Academy is scheduled to open in September 2026 in time for the new academic year.
The Aerospace Skills Academy forms a key strategic component of efforts to respond to the UK’s Industrial Strategy (including IS-8) and the Defence Industrial Strategy, both of which identify skills development as vital to sustaining global competitiveness in aerospace and wider engineering. The South West is home to a £2.7 billion aerospace cluster, making it a natural location for this investment in talent, innovation, and economic growth.
Pat Jones, Principal and Chief Executive of Weston College Group, said: “Signing this lease with Airbus is a transformational step in delivering world-class higher technical education that directly supports national and regional economic priorities.”
Simon Galpin, Airbus Head of Filton Site, said, “The Aerospace Skills Academy represents a major investment in the future of UK aerospace and advanced engineering. Working with the Weston College Group, we are creating a pipeline of highly skilled talent that supports national capability, regional growth, and the long-term competitiveness of our industry.”
The Academy will operate as a flagship centre for technical education and workforce development, specifically tailored to meet the evolving needs of the aerospace and defence and advanced engineering employers. Its purpose is to strengthen the skills pipeline by aligning training provision directly with industry demand, supporting both national capability and regional economic resilience.
At the heart of the Academy will be an employer-led curriculum, co-designed with Airbus and a network of strategic partners including Babcock International Group, GKN Aerospace, MBDA, NCC, Rolls-Royce, and regional SMEs. This collaborative approach will ensure learners develop the technical expertise, behaviours, and experience required to succeed in high-value engineering roles.
The Academy will also prioritise inclusive access and clear progression routes, enabling learners to move seamlessly from Level 3 apprenticeship programmes through to higher and degree-level qualifications. This approach will help open high-quality careers in advanced manufacturing and engineering to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.
Learners will be trained in refurbished workshop and teaching spaces featuring upgraded digital infrastructure and sustainability-focused systems. These facilities will mirror real industrial environments, providing hands-on, practical experience that prepares graduates to make an immediate and meaningful contribution to the UK’s advanced engineering, aerospace, and defence sectors.
