ESOL Extra Curricular Activities Underway for 25/26

Our ESOL learners at Weston College have already launched into an exciting new season of extracurricular activities - and we’re delighted to share an update on what they’ve been up to.

The ESOL learners began with a fantastic trip to the University of Bath, including a short visit into the city before heading home. A huge thank you to Liza and her team at the council for their generous financial and hands-on support, and to the Virtual Schools team for kindly providing the sandwiches.

Site Carpentry, Diploma

This level 2 diploma is aimed at learners looking to work in the carpentry industry, the course is the perfect stepping-stone into a site carpentry career to give you the skills to work in the industry.

This qualification covers all the main skills and knowledge you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work as a site carpenter.

As a site carpenter you will learn the skills and knowledge to cut, fasten, shape and design objects made from timber products or other related materials. It is a fast faced industry, and you should be comfortable using a range of tools and processes.

This course assumes that you have some knowledge and skill level but if you don’t, it offers a safe environment to start understanding tools such as a sliding bevel.

You will gain an understanding of all the skills and knowledge relating to the industry by completing the following mandatory units:

  • Health and Safety (NOT THE CSCS COURSE)
  • Principles of construction · Structural Carpentry
  • Non-Structural Carpentry Prior To Plastering
  • Non-Structural Carpentry Following Plastering
  • Timber Technology
  • Safe Use Of A Circular Saw

    Assessment Method

You will be assessed through practical skill tests, work observations, assignments and online assessments.

Qualifications gained upon course completion

Level 2 Diploma – Site Carpentry (City & Guilds)

Next Steps and Progression After Course Completion

Following successful completion of this qualification you will be qualified to work in the construction industry as a carpenter. To work on larger construction sites, you may need to pursue a CSCS card (The Construction Skills Certification Scheme), but this is something that can be discussed with the tutors during the course.

Financing Your Course

At Weston College, we believe that learning should be accessible to everyone. That's why this course is fully-funded (free) for anyone 19+ from August 1st 2023.

Entry Requirements

A general understanding of the construction industry with an interest in carpentry and some basic hand skills. To be eligible for enrolment, candidates must hold at least a Level 2 qualification and have achieved a minimum grade 4 or C in both English and Maths.

Plastering, Diploma

Plastering is a highly sought-after, well-paid trade and this course will be your first step into gaining the skills and knowledge needed to be a plasterer. At this level you will learn about becoming a Plasterer and all the behaviours and skills you will need to become proficient in the following: ·

  • Health and Safety
  • Principles of Construction
  • Basic Application of Plaster to a Range of Surfaces
  • Basic Screeding
  • Basic Floating
  • Basic Finishing

Entry Requirements

Prior to commencing the trade specific training, you will undergo a skills assessment period to allow you to try some of the aspects of the course before committing further. This will allow tutors to measure your suitability to the course.

Assessments

This is an assignment- based course and there are no exams. You will be continually assessed by tutors throughout the programme and be required to produce certain pieces of work for them to mark.

Progression Opportunities

This course could lead to several introductory roles within the construction industry or support your aspirations to progress onto the technical skills (Level 2)

We ask that you provide your own safety boots and stationary.

Preparing to Work in Public Services (Taunton)

This Three-Week Programme: Public & Protective Services offers a comprehensive and intensive introduction for individuals aspiring to careers within essential public safety and service sectors. Designed with a formal and rigorous approach, this programme aims to cultivate a deep understanding of the diverse landscape of public and protective services, illuminating the various career pathways available to participants. Central to its curriculum is the development of vital transferable employability skills, alongside specific protective service competencies, ensuring learners are well-equipped for future professional challenges.

Furthermore, the programme meticulously aligns its learning objectives with recognised vocational qualifications, such as BTEC Public Services and NCFE Protective Services, providing a robust foundation for continued academic and career progression. Crucially, it addresses the often-demanding realities of these professions by preparing learners for both the significant physical and mental requisites inherent in public and protective service roles, thereby fostering resilience and readiness for a fulfilling career dedicated to public welfare and safety.

Some of the subjects covered:

  • Introduction to sector roles (police, fire, ambulance, armed forces, prison, security)
  • Emergency First aid at work
  • Communication workshop (radio procedure, body language)
  • Health, fitness & wellbeing
  • Future tech in services: cyber, drones, bodycams
  • Problem-solving models under stress
  • Guest speaker / careers pathways

By the end of two weeks, you will:

  • Understand the structure and values of protective/public services.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and communication in practice.
  • Show awareness of ethical, legal, and community responsibilities.
  • Have begun developing the physical and mental resilience needed.
  • Be equipped with future-proof skills: digital awareness, adaptability, problem-solving.

MMA Welding Skills, Award

Learn the basics needed to start welding, this course is ideal for anyone who wants to become a welder or try their hand at something new and upskill.

This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in welding, enabling them to develop and improve their welding skills. The course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who wish to improve their welding knowledge and techniques.

You will have the chance to develop skills required for an engineering career in our brand-new state-of-the-art £650k welding facility. Which includes a ‘augmented virtual welding machine’ allowing you to learn basic techniques in your initial training. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is new to welding to gain industry recognised welding skills:

On this course, students will learn the fundamentals of welding, including health and safety, preparation, equipment setup, and welding techniques using the TIG welding process. The course will run for eight weeks, with four start points available throughout the year.

At the end of the course, students will receive a Level 2 Award in Welding. Students can then progress onto another Level 2 Award in Welding including (MIG, MMA, TIG Aluminium or Oxy Acetylene) where they will build on their existing welding skills and knowledge to further improve their techniques.

Subjects/Topics Covered

  • MMA (Manual Metal Arc) welding is a process that uses an electrode to join pieces of metal together. The electrode is held in an electrode holder and is manually fed into the joint to create a fusion bond. The process is versatile and can be used on a wide variety of metals and in a range of settings.

  • Certificate in Personal & Social Development Skills. The Certificate in Personal & Social Development Skills is an add on qualification to your Level 2 Welding Award.

Assessment Method

24 Welding process specific questions, 10 practical test pieces (6 vertical test pieces, 4 flat pieces). Practical welding tasks will assess the student's ability to safely set up, operate, and weld using the MMA welding process to produce quality welds

Written assignments will assess the student's understanding of the theory and principles behind welding, such as the types of metals, welding techniques, welding safety, and welding equipment.

The assessment methods used will be designed to ensure that the student has the knowledge, skills, and understanding required to successfully complete the course and gain the Level 2 Award in Welding. The assessment will also ensure that the student is competent and confident in the selected welding process and can apply their knowledge in real-world situations.

Entry Requirements

Learners will only be able to complete the Level 2 qualification in whichever unit they complete in the Level 1, e.g cannot do the Level 1 MIG and then expect to do the Level 2 TIG

MAG Welding Skills, Award

Learn the basics needed to start welding, this course is ideal for anyone who wants to become a welder or try their hand at something new and upskill.

This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in welding, enabling them to develop and improve their welding skills. The course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who wish to improve their welding knowledge and techniques.

You will have the chance to develop skills required for an engineering career in our brand-new state-of-the-art £650k welding facility. Which includes a ‘augmented virtual welding machine’ allowing you to learn basic techniques in your initial training. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is new to welding to gain industry recognised welding skills:

On this course, students will learn the fundamentals of welding, including health and safety, preparation, equipment setup, and welding techniques using the MAG welding process. The course will run for eight weeks, with four start points available throughout the year.

At the end of the course, students will receive a Level 2 Award in Welding. Students can then progress onto another Level 2 Award in Welding including (MMA, TIG, TIG Aluminium or Oxy Acetylene) where they will build on their existing welding skills and knowledge to further improve their techniques.

Subjects/Topics Covered

Students can select the skill they wish to develop, such as:

  • MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding is a process that uses a wire electrode to join pieces of metal together. The wire is fed through a welding gun and is melted into the joint to create a bond. MAG welding is most commonly used with a triple mixture of gases including Argon CO2 & Oxygen. The process is fast and efficient and is commonly used in industrial settings.
  • Certificate in Personal & Social Development Skills. The Certificate in Personal & Social Development Skills is an add on qualification to your Level 2 Welding Award.

Assessment Method

24 Welding process specific questions, 10 practical test pieces (6 vertical test pieces, 4 flat pieces). Practical welding tasks will assess the student's ability to safely set up, operate, and weld using the MAG welding process to produce quality welds.

Written assignments will assess the student's understanding of the theory and principles behind welding, such as the types of metals, welding techniques, welding safety, and welding equipment. Introductory Metal Inert Gas Welding Skills, Award

Learn the basics needed to start welding, this course is ideal for anyone who wants to become a welder or try their hand at something new and upskill.

This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in welding, enabling them to develop and improve their welding skills. The course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who wish to improve their welding knowledge and techniques.

You will have the chance to develop skills required for an engineering career in our brand-new state-of-the-art £650k welding facility. Which includes a ‘augmented virtual welding machine’ allowing you to learn basic techniques in your initial training. Learn the basics needed to start welding, this course is ideal for anyone who wants to become a welder or try their hand at something new and upskill.

This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in welding, enabling them to develop and improve their welding skills. The course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who wish to improve their welding knowledge and techniques.

You will have the chance to develop skills required for an engineering career in our brand-new state-of-the-art £650k welding facility. Which includes a ‘augmented virtual welding machine’ allowing you to learn basic techniques in your initial training. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is new to welding to gain industry recognised welding skills:

This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in welding, enabling them to develop and improve their welding skills. The course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who wish to improve their welding knowledge and techniques.

Introduction to Hair and Barbering Skills

Discover the basics of hair care and styling through our engaging introductory sessions, perfect for beginners or anyone curious about hairstyling. These taster sessions are tailored to help you explore the fundamentals of the industry in a relaxed, supportive setting.

These workshops are also an excellent starting point for those considering our part-time Level 2 courses in Hairdressing or Barbering, beginning in September 2025. They provide an opportunity to learn essential techniques, gain insight into the skills required, and connect with our expert instructors.

Throughout the program, you’ll engage in hands-on activities, discussions, and practical exercises, covering topics such as:
