Course Overview
Unleash your creativity with this exciting two-year course in media make-up, special effects, prosthetics, and hair design at Weston College. You’ll develop hands-on skills in airbrush and camouflage make-up, prosthetic pieces and bald caps, fashion and photographic make-up, face and body art, bridal hair styling, fantasy hair design, and postiche styling – preparing you for careers in film, TV, theatre, and live performance.
The course offers substantial work experience, giving you real industry insight and confidence. You’ll create live special effects for events such as Puxton Park’s Phobia attraction and gain practical experience working on client-facing projects within the College and local community. Exciting trips to industry hubs, including the Harry Potter Studios and Wella’s training centre, provide exposure to professional environments and the latest creative techniques.
At Weston, you’ll learn in purpose-built workshops with industry-standard tools and facilities, supported by expert tutors with professional experience in media make-up and hair design. You’ll also join the Career Excellence Hub, which provides employer-led projects, guest speakers, industry encounters, and networking opportunities designed to make you career ready. By the end of the course, you’ll have the technical expertise, creative flair, and professional confidence to progress into higher education or launch a career in the dynamic world of theatre, film, television, and creative media.

Entry requirements
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9-3, including English. A strong creative flair and interest in make-up artistry are essential.
