Szabina Takes on Coding
Szabina has taken on a brand-new course offered as part of a Skills Alliance between UWE Bristol and Weston College. She enrolled on the coding course in order to retrain and develop her skills in a new area.
Szabina had been working full-time for over ten years but had wanted to retrain for a long time. Despite never having worked in or studied coding before, Szabina pursued this great opportunity, taking advantage of the fact that there are no entry requirements, and the course is also free.
Szabina said: “When I saw the advert saying this course was free, I thought I have nothing to lose – this is a great opportunity!
“I have no previous coding experience and I am hoping it will give me more insight into coding and the IT industry. As well as the fundamentals of coding, including python, we have also learnt a lot about project management which will be useful.”
The coding course covers a range of knowledge and practical skills including:
- Coding requirements and planning
- Understand coding design
- Implementation of coding
- Software testing
- Understand deployment, maintenance and configuration management
The course is a mix of virtual online learning and one face-to-face lesson each week at the superb higher education facilities at UWE Bristol’s Frenchay Campus.
Szabina adds: “The teachers are amazing and very supportive, having the Weston College course here in Bristol makes it more accessible.
“If you are thinking of retraining, I would recommend it, it’s been a great experience. Don’t be scared, have the courage, believe in yourself and give it a go – it’s free!”
This course and all of the other free level 3 courses are offered as part of the National Skills Fund. This is an initiative set up by the Government offering £95 million of funding since April 2021 to provide learners aged 19 and above access to their first full Level 3 qualification. This fund will promote getting people back into work as well as people like Szabina who are looking to retrain.
