Level 3
Geography, A Level
Explore the world around you, from local communities to global systems, with A Level Geography. You’ll develop a deeper understanding of environmental, social, and economic processes while building the skills to analyse, investigate, and interpret complex geographical issues.
Course Overview
A Level Geography gives you a unique insight into how people, places, and environments interact. You’ll study both physical geography (rivers, coasts, hazards, ecosystems) and human geography (urbanisation, migration, globalisation, and development), combining classroom theory with practical fieldwork.
At Loxton Campus, you’ll benefit from modern classrooms and specialist resources, including GIS software, mapping tools, and access to research databases. Fieldwork is a key part of your learning – you’ll visit local and national sites to collect and analyse data, preparing you for higher education or careers where practical research skills are essential.
The department has strong links with the University of the West of England and the Geographical Association. As part of your course, you will have opportunities to attend field trips and external lectures. We also host both in-person and online talks from universities and employers such as the Environment Agency and WaterAid, while a visit to Hinkley Point C offers insight into nuclear power, energy security, and the wide range of jobs created by this major project. These experiences help you explore the many different roles available within the field.
You will gain valuable work experience in June of your first year and February of your second year. We will support you in finding suitable placements or provide a week of college-based experiences that align with your career goals.
In your first year, you will also follow a pathway that reflects your career aspirations. Options such as environmental or social enterprise pathways will equip you with additional skills and experiences to further enhance your prospects.
Experienced and passionate teachers will guide you through the programme and encourage you to participate in discussions and debates. Our Tutor Learning Mentors will help you develop study strategies, prepare for assessments, and plan your progression.
