A Level Photography gives you the chance to express your creativity, explore exciting visual techniques, and develop the technical and artistic skills needed for a future in the photographic industries. This inspiring course is ideal if you want to experiment with cameras, editing, and visual storytelling while building a powerful portfolio that showcases your unique style.
Course Overview
Throughout this course, you’ll explore a broad range of photographic approaches, from traditional film processes to digital image-making and experimental techniques. You’ll work across film photography, digital photography, studio lighting, darkroom processes, image manipulation, and creative editing, allowing you to discover the areas that best reflect your interests.
You’ll be encouraged to study the work of influential photographers, develop your own creative voice, and push your ideas further through both practical work and critical thinking.
You’ll study at our purpose-built Sixth Form at Loxton Campus, which offers professional-standard facilities including darkrooms, digital suites, studio setups, and editing labs. This environment mirrors industry practice and helps you develop strong technical ability. You’ll be taught by experienced lecturers with real-world photography backgrounds.
As part of our Career Excellence Hub, you’ll access a range of exciting opportunities, including work experience with photographers, agencies, and creative studios. You can complete placements in both Year 1 and Year 2 or take part in a week of structured experiences within the College. You can also follow pathways such as media or creative to develop specialist skills linked to your ambitions.
In Year 1, you’ll work towards an AS qualification before progressing to the full A Level in Year 2. This flexible structure allows many learners to take four subjects in their first year before continuing three to full A Level. AS Levels also carry UCAS points.
What will I study?
You will explore:
- Digital and analogue (film) photography
- Studio lighting and location photography
- Darkroom processes and printmaking
- Adobe editing software and digital manipulation
- Experimental and contemporary photographic techniques
- Visual research, contextual studies, and artist analysis
- How to plan, develop, and refine a creative portfolio
You will also complete a substantial amount of independent work, developing your ideas through written, visual, and practical exploration.

How do AS and A Levels work?
You will normally study three or four A Levels over two years. In Year 1, you will complete an AS qualification, giving you a strong foundation before progressing to full A Level in Year 2.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes:
- End-of-year progression assessment in Year 1
- Coursework (60%) – a personal investigation with practical and written elements
- Controlled assignment (40%) – an externally set creative exam project

You can also progress onto Art and Design UAL Foundation Diploma (Pre-Degree) at Weston College or creative degrees at University Centre Weston, including Photography in Practice.
Entry requirements
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9–4, including English and maths.
