Course Overview

A Level Sociology gives you the opportunity to study society, social issues, and human behaviour from multiple perspectives. This programme teaches you to understand the main sociological perspectives and apply these ideas to the academic study of society. Key topics include culture, socialisation and identity, research methods, globalisation, and beliefs.

A key feature of sociology is the application of subjective ideas. The course encourages you to interpret and evaluate society, exploring debates on cultural practices – such as arranged marriage or the death penalty – and why ideas may be acceptable in some cultures but not others. Studying Sociology develops strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills while helping you engage with issues that matter.

At Loxton Campus, you will benefit from modern classrooms, digital resources, and case study materials. Lessons combine interactive discussions, research projects, and group work, allowing you to apply theory to real-world contexts.

In Year One, you will study towards an AS Level, providing a solid foundation before progressing to full A Level study in Year Two. This offers flexibility for students taking four subjects and contributes UCAS points for university progression.

Studying Sociology with us also includes membership in our Career Excellence Hub, giving access to work experience, guest lectures, and projects that enhance employability. Opportunities include placements in June of Year One and February of Year Two, or a week of college-based experiences aligned with your career goals.

Experienced teachers and dedicated Tutor Learning Mentors support your study skills, exam preparation, and applications to university or employment, ensuring you are well prepared for the next stage of your education.
