Course Overview
Delivered at the South West Skills Campus, our Engineering Technologies (Level 3 EAL) Diploma is designed for learners who already have some experience in engineering – or have completed a Level 2 course such as PEO.
You’ll train in industry-standard workshops with access to milling machines, lathes, welding bays, and CNC equipment. Expert tutors with industrial experience will guide you through technical projects, ensuring you master both the hands-on and theoretical sides of machining and fabrication. Work experience is built into the course to help you apply what you learn in real engineering environments.
As a member of our Engineering Career Excellence Hub, you’ll have opportunities to take part in employer-led projects, visits, and demonstrations that bring engineering to life and help you understand the range of careers available in this dynamic sector.
What will I study?

How will I be assessed?
- Practical assessments in our workshops
- Regular observation of your work by tutors
- Two online exams (with ondemand resits) to test your understanding of technical theory
- Maintenance of an engineering portfolio to track your progress

Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs at grades 9–4, including English, maths, and science
- A successful interview
What can I do after this course?
- Progress into an engineering apprenticeship (e.g. Engineering Operative, Fitter, Welder)
- Take a Level 4 course or foundation degree in Engineering
- Enter employment as a machinist, fabricator, or production technician
