Last year we met Lillie, a learner who lacked confidence, but had huge potential.

Lillie’s dream was to work as Healthcare Support Worker, and she started her journey with us, on a traineeship.

Traineeships give learners the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a sector they are interested in, while also improving employability skills, English and Maths.

It wasn’t an easy start, as at first Lillie felt that she wasn’t ready to progress, but that simply wasn’t the case.

We recently caught up with Caitlin, our wonderful Health and Social Care assessor, who told us about her experience in completing her Level 3 qualification, and how it resulted in a full time job here at Weston College. Here's what she told us!

My role at Weston College is as a Health and Social Care assessor for 16–19-year-olds and adult learners studying Health and Social Care qualifications. I observe and assess learners either on work placement or in their work setting.

I have been working as a Lecturer in Further Education for 18 years. I completed my Level 3 Qualification and worked in the Early Years sector in wrap around care for ages 0-16 and Social Care safeguarding. In FE I have worked with learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities specialising in social and emotional barriers.What inspires me to work in education is supporting young people while they are working towards achieving their aspirations and dreams.

Hi i'm Jazmin and I am one of the Health Lecturers here at Weston College! I have experience working in hospitals on various wards, including Gastro, Cardiology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Maternity and Mental Health.

Here at the College we offer a great range of courses tailored to the industry requirements to ensure all of our students stand out from the crowd! The industry is continuously growing and there are more opportunities in the Health sector than ever before. You have the option to work in so many different settings and no 2 days are the same.

To put it simply, I teach science because I genuinely love science. The different schools of science, the methodology and even the philosophy of science. Most of all I love that science can be done by anyone of any age and qualifications. All it requires is curiosity and noticing something in the world and asking yourself this question, "Huh, I wonder why that happens?". I bring that enthusiasm to teaching my subject, I prefer to have classrooms filled with meaningful discussion than just copying off the board.

Hi, I am Nichola and will be organising your placements for the duration of your Health and Social Care course here at Weston College. I have been working closely with Health and Social Care employers in North Somerset and the surrounding areas for over 6 years to enable successful work placements for our learners. I have had over 25 years experience in this sector from Care in the Community to Management, Outreach Support for Vulnerable Adults, pioneering the Home from Hospital scheme at Weston General Hospital.
