MMA Welding Skills, Award

Learn the basics needed to start welding, this course is ideal for anyone who wants to become a welder or try their hand at something new and upskill.

This course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in welding, enabling them to develop and improve their welding skills. The course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who wish to improve their welding knowledge and techniques.

You will have the chance to develop skills required for an engineering career in our brand-new state-of-the-art £650k welding facility. Which includes a ‘augmented virtual welding machine’ allowing you to learn basic techniques in your initial training. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is new to welding to gain industry recognised welding skills:

On this course, students will learn the fundamentals of welding, including health and safety, preparation, equipment setup, and welding techniques using the TIG welding process. The course will run for eight weeks, with four start points available throughout the year.

At the end of the course, students will receive a Level 2 Award in Welding. Students can then progress onto another Level 2 Award in Welding including (MIG, MMA, TIG Aluminium or Oxy Acetylene) where they will build on their existing welding skills and knowledge to further improve their techniques.

Subjects/Topics Covered

  • MMA (Manual Metal Arc) welding is a process that uses an electrode to join pieces of metal together. The electrode is held in an electrode holder and is manually fed into the joint to create a fusion bond. The process is versatile and can be used on a wide variety of metals and in a range of settings.

  • Certificate in Personal & Social Development Skills. The Certificate in Personal & Social Development Skills is an add on qualification to your Level 2 Welding Award.

Assessment Method

24 Welding process specific questions, 10 practical test pieces (6 vertical test pieces, 4 flat pieces). Practical welding tasks will assess the student's ability to safely set up, operate, and weld using the MMA welding process to produce quality welds

Written assignments will assess the student's understanding of the theory and principles behind welding, such as the types of metals, welding techniques, welding safety, and welding equipment.

The assessment methods used will be designed to ensure that the student has the knowledge, skills, and understanding required to successfully complete the course and gain the Level 2 Award in Welding. The assessment will also ensure that the student is competent and confident in the selected welding process and can apply their knowledge in real-world situations.

Entry Requirements

Learners will only be able to complete the Level 2 qualification in whichever unit they complete in the Level 1, e.g cannot do the Level 1 MIG and then expect to do the Level 2 TIG

Subjects/Topics Covered

Students can select the skill they wish to develop, such as:

  • MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding is a process that uses a wire electrode to join pieces of metal together. The wire is fed through a welding gun and is melted into the joint to create a bond. MAG welding is most commonly used with a triple mixture of gases including Argon CO2 & Oxygen. The process is fast and efficient and is commonly used in industrial settings.
