This apprenticeship offers a specialised and exciting career path for individuals passionate about working with advanced composite materials. A composites technician plays a crucial role in the production and manufacturing of materials and components that find application in diverse applications such as airplanes, cars, boats, turbine blades, oil and gas rigs, bridges, trains, and satellites. Their expertise spans across a wide range of processes and their specialised knowledge and skills contribute to the success of manufacturing programmes and projects.
Show more...WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE
Composites manufacturing is the combining of materials to form a lighter and stronger rigid structure as an alternative to metal. These lightweight rigid structures are essential in the Aerospace, Automotive, Marine and Renewables industries and are becoming increasingly important in the Oil & Gas, Construction and Rail sectors.
Examples of areas you will learn are:
- Engineering drawing
- Composite material production for marine construction
- Manufacturing processes
- Principles of defects, detection, and repair processes
- Wet layup techniques
- Resin infusion techniques.
ASSESSMENT METHOD
Apprentices will need to achieve a Level 3 knowledge qualification and a work-based NVQ qualification before the end-point assessment.
The end-point assessment is a work-based project (a report of not less than 1,500 words focusing on specific work-based tasks) and a professional discussion, including a ‘viva’ on the work-based project.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
Apprentices can progress to related degrees or degree apprenticeships, including those on offer at University Centre Weston, or into engineering management positions.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
