 Course Overview 

As an engineering fitter apprentice, you’ll spend most of your time in the workplace, learning from experienced engineers while earning a wage. You’ll develop high-level skills in fitting, assembly, mechanical maintenance, and precision measurement. At the same time, your college training will help you build the technical knowledge, safety awareness, and engineering mindset needed for industry. 

As a student, you will automatically join our Engineering & Green Skills Career Excellence Hub, providing access to employer networking, industry visits, guest lectures, and career-focused activities to ensure you are fully prepared for your next steps. This course equips you not just with specific skills, but with the broader knowledge and confidence needed for a successful career in this industry. 

You will be guided by expert lecturers with extensive industry experience who will help you develop the skills to work safely, accurately, and professionally – just as you would in a real engineering environment. 

 What will I study? 

  • Mechanical fitting and assembly techniques 
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings 
  • Precision measurement and quality control 
  • Using tools, machines, and workshop equipment 
  • Fault-finding and problem-solving 
  • Engineering materials and components 
  • Workplace safety and professional behaviours 

 How will I be assessed? 

  • Regular skills assessments in the workplace 
  • A portfolio of evidence 
  • Observations by a specialist assessor 
  • End-point assessment

 Entry requirements 

  • You must be employed in a suitable engineering role 
  • Typically GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including maths and English 
  • A practical mindset and willingness to learn 

 What can I do after this course? 

  • Progress into roles such as Mechanical Fitter, Maintenance Technician, Assembly Engineer, or Manufacturing Operative 
  • Continue into higher-level apprenticeships (e.g., Engineering Technician, Maintenance Engineer, or HNC pathways) 
  • Build toward senior positions or multi-skilled engineering roles
