Music Performance and Production, UAL Diploma
This exciting course has been developed to provide you with an understanding of music performance and production as a collaborative process. You will learn about the music industry, performing and recording, using professional music software, composition, studio skills and music production.
What will I study?
The subjects/units you will cover include:
- Further transferable skills development.
- Introduction to Music Industry expectations.
- Digital Skills development to include Website creation.
You will also benefit from: Practical and theoretical sessions which may Include workshops and guest lectures. External performance opportunities Industry Engagement: Guest Lecturers
There are 4 projects throughout the year, each of which are level relevant with their outcomes:
- “I feel Britty”
- “Crossroads”
- “Chip off the old Rock”
- “Encore”
You will create a professional website for each of your projects. There are 4 projects throughout the year where you will improve on your skills, knowledge and behaviours within the Performing Arts Sector. This course will provide you with a good foundation to move onto the Level 3 pathways.
Entry Requirements
- A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9-2 with at least two at grade 4, or a qualifying Level 1 qualification.
- Good English and Maths skills desirable. You will study English and Maths alongside your main programme if you have not yet achieved Grade 4.
- Some music experience is preferred; this may include self-taught instrumental performance or production skills.
- A passion for music and a desire to progress within the college (Level 3). Positive attitude to learning, ability to work individually or as part of a team.
- Good standard of written / theory work which supports all practical projects.
Uniform Information
- Music based equipment package: Although not compulsory, these items would be valuable.
- Earbuds (Moulded are best)
- Headphones (Closed Back)
- Guitarists/Bassists: String pack, picks, Capo
- Drummers: Sticks of preferred gauge
- Vocalists: Suitable microphone
Trip Information
There are lots of trips, experiences and opportunities within our music department, some examples
from this year include:
- Bands are playing at the Scare Fest at Puxton Park (October)
- Nashville - usually in March/April time
- BBC Radio Cardiff trip (November time)
- Multiple Gig opportunities - Electric Banana WSM, Ye Olde inn Bristol, Open Mic night Front Room WSM
- Benefit from talks/workshops with industry musicians (For example, Luke Potter – song writing
- Pano Mallouris – session musician, Ian Robertson – Tour manager)
Students will also benefit from live recording of album and video collaborating opportunities
