This exciting course has been developed to provide you with in-depth knowledge of the topics required for a successful career in the music industry. You will learn about the music industry, performing and recording, using professional music software, composition, critique, and music production.
What will I study?
The subjects/elements you will cover may include:
- Further transferable skills development.
- Introduction to Music Industry expectations.
- Practical and theoretical sessions to Include workshops and guest lectures.
- Digital Skills development to include Website creation.
- Industry base skill learning.
- Professional profile development.

There are 4 projects throughout the year, each of which are level relevant with their outcomes:
Year 1:
- “I feel Britty”
- “Crossroads”
- “Chip off the old Rock” “Collabor-8”
Year 2:
- “Take the Power Back”
- “Ready Player 1”
- “I said Maybe”
- “Collabor-8” (Final Major Project for L3 Y2)
You will create a professional website for each of your projects. There are 4 projects throughout the year where you will improve on your skills, knowledge and behaviours within the Performing Arts Sector.
Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs (or Level 2 equivalent) at grade 9-4, including English and Maths
- If progressing from a Level 2 course – entry requirement is a MERIT
- Previous study of music / performance or technical experience / industry experience would be highly advantageous.
- A considerable passion for music and a desire to progress to HE studies, or Industry employment.
- High standard of written / theory work which supports all practical projects. *The ability to work both independently, and collaboratively is essential.
Uniform Information
- Music based equipment package: Although not compulsory, these items would be valuable.
- Earbuds (Moulded are best)
- Headphones (Closed Back)
- Guitarists/Bassists: String pack, picks, Capo
- Drummers: Sticks of preferred gauge
- Vocalists: Suitable microphone
Trip Information
There are lots of trips, experiences and opportunities within our music department, some examples
from this year include:
- Bands are playing at the Scare Fest at Puxton Park (October)
- Nashville - usually in March/April time BBC Radio Cardiff trip (November time) Multiple Gig opportunities - Electric Banana WSM, Ye Olde inn Bristol, Open Mic night Front Room WSM Benefit from talks/workshops with industry musicians (For example, Luke Potter – song writing Pano Mallouris – session musician, Ian Robertson – Tour manager)
Students will also benefit from live recording of album and video collaborating opportunities
