This course is developed to support students experiencing complex learning and support needs. The course is delivered from the purpose-built Sensory Learning Base, specifically designed to empower learners to develop independent life skills, communication, self-regulation and work towards individual EHCP outcomes and aspirations. Every learner has a specialist personal tutor who will work with the young person’s circle of support and coordinate their learning journey. A learner’s curriculum is designed around their needs, aspirations and built around their Education, Health and Care Plan. The course is delivered and supported by teachers and support staff who are highly trained in a multitude of specialist approaches.
The focus for learners is tailored and will include curriculum areas such as communication and thinking skills, life skills, accessing the community and personal development, work experience opportunities. Additional areas may include English and Maths qualifications, external work experience, Duke of Edinburgh awards, vocational and/or therapeutic sessions. The programme design is supported by the Preparing for Adulthood framework and learner progress Is assessed following RARPA to allow aspirational target setting and celebration of all achievements. A Total Communication approach is followed throughout the course and the positive behaviour support model is embedded across the college, with course staff trained at a high level. In addition, staff are trained to support individual health care needs.
Learner destinations may include increased independence, working with a social care provider, moving into supported living, gaining a voluntary work placements or moving on to a higher-level course. The course is 1 to 3 years allowing opportunities to be maximised.
