QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED

A Levels develop the knowledge, skills and study habits to excel at university, as well as the attributes recognised by employers.

Your academic studies will be complemented with enrichment opportunities such as trips, mentoring and work experience, providing the perfect springboard for your future career.

A Levels are assessed through exams at the end of two years of study. Most learners study three subjects - some choose four.

With an apprenticeship you’ll go straight into the workplace and be shown clear routes to progress straight into employment within a specific occupation. You can achieve nationally recognised qualifications, earn a wage, and gain skills that will see you get ahead. On average you will spend 20% of your learning time in the college and 80% within the workplace

Professional and technical qualifications are designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to gain employment within specific industries or occupations. They provide a balance between theory and practical skills development. They are suited to those who want to get hands-on experience within a particular vocational area. These programmes include work placements. Assessment is more varied and will include exams, coursework and practical work.

T Levels give you the chance to learn what a real career is like while you continue your studies. T Levels have been designed with leading businesses and employers to give you the knowledge and skills you need, including a minimum of 45 days on an industry placement – this means you will spend 80% of your learning time in College and 20% within the workplace.

Chimdiya and Erick enjoying their VR experience

This week two learners from Priory School had the opportunity to gain work experience with the Marketing Department at Weston College.

We asked Chimdiya and Erick to share their experiences, and give us a behind the scenes look into work experience with Weston College:

Work experience for me was an enjoyable experience and a lot of skills were learnt. We had a tour of the campus and we got to see some of their facilities and classrooms where their courses take place.

The staff made me feel very welcome and gave clear instructions on what to do and aided me whenever I was unsure about certain tasks. During the week I was given a series of tasks which I enjoyed doing. We were given an opportunity to experience virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) where we were able to view holograms in real- world settings.

We were given a 1-hour lunch break where we could go to the cafeteria to buy some food; they had really good paninis.

The most enjoyable part of my work experience was how everyone was so welcoming and how everyday was so different and enjoyable.

As the days went by, I was given a bigger task like finding different platforms for different companies and businesses for the business awards, reviewing the past prospectuses of the college and conversing about the differences and similarities. which I found challenging at first, but as time went on, I eventually understood.

Hi my name is Erick, I am 14 years old and have been doing Work Experience for the past three days with Weston College.

I’ve mostly been learning about the different departments in marketing and what it is like in the life of someone who does Marketing at Weston College.

So far I’ve designed some web design ideas, watched how people record footage for their advertisement videos, written about how the website can be improved to target a certain audience, finding Twitter Tags of companies and researching local events which might clash with key openings or other events.

I even got to try out how VR is being implemented into learning at Weston College and other places of education! I’ve been finding it to be quite a unique interesting experience of being able to work at this place as a part time job.

Especially being given tasks which probably the normal person who works at Marketing would get.

I also get one free hour of lunch and get to go off to the canteen! The food is pretty good, especially the Paninis. I will always remember them and buy them at any opportunity.

Weston College seems to be an amazing place to go especially with all the courses you can take! You can literally get your dream job and start here.

The facilities are all well designed and kept extremely tidy, being extremely suited for certain subjects!

So overall an amazing place and I’ve been enjoying it while I work here for work Experience!

Health and Social Care learners take a trip to London

Recently our Level 3 Health and Social Care learners took a trip to London.

The aim of the trip was to encourage the students to learn and gain an understanding of London’s rich medical history, while also experiencing the amazing sights the city has to offer.

Learners explored Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole's historical impact on medicine at the Florence Nightingale Museum, located on Lambeth Palace Road in South East London.

The museum offers an abundance of rich learning opportunities, from tours to their popular ‘Meet Miss Nightingale’ series, which gives learners a chance to hear live, factual performances from actors taking on the role of Florence Nightingale herself.

After spending the day at the museum, the students were able to enjoy some live music at the Hard Rock Café, followed by a stroll past Buckingham Palace and some shopping in Oxford Street.

Our Health and Social Care students thoroughly enjoyed the trip and were really able to develop their knowledge and understanding of historical healthcare practices.
