A Levels develop the knowledge, skills and study habits to excel at university, as well as the attributes recognised by employers.
Your academic studies will be complemented with enrichment opportunities such as trips, mentoring and work experience, providing the perfect springboard for your future career.
A Levels are assessed through exams at the end of two years of study. Most learners study three subjects - some choose four.
With an apprenticeship you’ll go straight into the workplace and be shown clear routes to progress straight into employment within a specific occupation. You can achieve nationally recognised qualifications, earn a wage, and gain skills that will see you get ahead. On average you will spend 20% of your learning time in the college and 80% within the workplace
Professional and technical qualifications are designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to gain employment within specific industries or occupations. They provide a balance between theory and practical skills development. They are suited to those who want to get hands-on experience within a particular vocational area. These programmes include work placements. Assessment is more varied and will include exams, coursework and practical work.
T Levels give you the chance to learn what a real career is like while you continue your studies. T Levels have been designed with leading businesses and employers to give you the knowledge and skills you need, including a minimum of 45 days on an industry placement – this means you will spend 80% of your learning time in College and 20% within the workplace.

This week, Business West organised a Media Faculty Tour for local employers from Weston-super-Mare and Bristol to attend Weston College’s Loxton Campus to explore the fantastic facilities and gain a better understanding of what our students can offer businesses. Employers such as LRB Media, Green Frog Connect, The Hive, and CIMA attended, getting first-hand insight into how Weston College Media operate.
Addi Coath, one of the Media lecturers at Weston College, led the tour, viewing crucial Creative Arts facilities such as the Weston Waves student-led radio suite, the fantastic music recording studios, and the Apple Mac suite where students edit their work.
In addition, employers had the opportunity to visit our TV Studio, where they explored the impressive work produced by Media students over the past year. They viewed a variety of final projects, gaining a first-hand appreciation of the creativity, dedication, and talent demonstrated in each piece.
Following the showcase, employers were introduced to the college’s top-of-the-line equipment, which is made fully accessible to students at no cost. This invaluable resource enables students to create professional-quality work while developing hands-on experience with industry-standard tools, preparing them for the demands of the media sector.
To finish off, the group was shown our brand-new Podcast Suite which will be available to students in September. With sound proofing and professional equipment, this new addition will enhance the students’ learning experience and develop their range of skills further.
By inviting potential local employers to tour our facilities, meet the staff, and ask questions, we offer them a first-hand look at the outstanding work happening across the college. These visits highlight the mutual benefits of collaboration: students gain valuable real-world experience by working from briefs and developing ideas alongside clients, while employers have the opportunity to help shape the next generation of talent and receive high-quality marketing and promotional content created by our students.
With our brand-new Media T Level launching in September, this was a fantastic opportunity for employers to see the benefits of recruiting students and getting involved with this amazing new initiative which gives students invaluable industry experience.
Lynsey McKinstry, Strategic Business Partnerships Manager at Weston College, assisted Business West in the organisation of this insightful tour. She expressed her gratitude to both Business West and the employers who attended the event, saying:
“It was a pleasure to welcome a group of employers on the Media Production Faculty Tour and showcase the outstanding facilities and exciting new developments within our Media and Creative faculty. Weston College is home to an incredible amount of talent, and events like this highlight the power of industry collaboration, in partnership with Business West, to help shape a dynamic, future-ready curriculum.”
Thank you to all the employers in attendance and we hope to collaborate with you in the future to support the future generation of Media professionals.

Last month, South Bristol Youth Charity brought together a group of enthusiastic Year 9 students from Hans Price Academy and Broadoak Academy for an engaging visit to Weston College’s South West Skills Campus.
The students participated in an interactive Motor Vehicle Workshop led by Iain Forster and Tony Lowe from the Weston College Motor Vehicle Team. Working in small groups, the students got hands-on experience learning about and disassembling different car components, using high-quality tools and equipment to simulate real industry practices.
The day also included an insightful apprenticeship talk delivered by Erin Allsworth, the Apprenticeship Recruitment Advisor at Weston College, where students were encouraged to ask questions and explore the variety of apprenticeship opportunities available to them. This valuable session helped to explain alternative education routes and highlighted the potential of vocational training and hands-on careers.
To round off the visit, students toured the South West Skills Campus, including the cutting-edge Construction and Engineering facilities, gaining a broader understanding of college life and the diverse opportunities available after secondary school.
South Bristol Youth Charity aims to motivate and empower young people by expanding their awareness of different career and education pathways, helping to build students’ confidence, resilience, and long-term aspirations.
This kind of experience is crucial in helping young people make informed choices about their futures. By collaborating with schools and industry professionals, we create a safe, supportive environment where prospective students can discover their potential and feel empowered to pursue high-quality education and careers.
