The Level 2 Certificate is ideal for learners just starting out in their career with supporting learning in educational settings. You will gain the work experience you need to get your career off to a strong start and you’ll achieve a nationally recognised NCFE CACHE teaching assistant qualification.

The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to support pupils in primary, secondary or SEN schools and colleges. This course is designed for people aged over 19 and will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to become a teaching assistant.

You’ll learn about significant stages of development between birth and 19 years of age, and how to build positive relationships and communicate effectively with young people. You will learn about the actions you can take to safeguard children and young people, and how you can support them in developing self-esteem, independence, and abilities for learning.

You’ll benefit from being taught by tutors who have previously been teachers and have a wealth of experience in the sector.

You need to secure a placement of your choice prior to the course starting for a minimum of 6 hours per week. Confirmation of this will be required before being able to enrol on the programme. As well as your college day and placement, you will be expected to undertake between 8 to 10 hours self-study each week.

Assessment Method

The course will be assessed through assignment work, practical observations in your setting, and an e-portfolio. It will be useful to have your own laptop so that you can access the online learning sites in college and at home, during self-study.

Entry Requirements

You will need to attend a short interview to gain a place on the course. Acceptance is dependent on securing a placement in a school, unless you are already employed at a school supporting the pupils learning. If a voluntary placement is needed. you will need to arrange this and ensure confirmation is sent to yourself which you can show college. It is also dependent on a satisfactory enhanced DBS check which is for workforce and not for volunteers. College can support you through the DBS process. If you have anything that may appear on your DBS you must make the college aware at interview and the schools aware when you are applying for a placement. If you have anything that may appear on your DBS, you must make the college aware at interview and the schools aware when you are applying for a placement. An enhanced DBS costs approximately £50.

An e-portfolio system is used for recording evidence, so a basic knowledge of ICT is an advantage. You will be writing assignments for the different units, so a strong, basic understanding of English and Maths is also required.
