English, Functional Skills
This course is designed for adults looking to improve their communication skills in English.
Functional Skills qualifications prepare you for a demanding content that is relevant to the workplace. They build your confidence to apply the subject knowledge to different contexts. They provide a foundation for progression to employment and further technical education, and they help learners to develop skills for everyday life.
The course covers three main areas: speaking and listening, reading and writing. It is designed to help you communicate effectively in everyday situations, such as at work, in social situations, and when dealing with official documents.
- Speaking and listening – this course will build your confidence and improve your ability to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts. You will learn how to express yourself clearly and appropriately, and how to engage in active listening to better understand what others are saying.
- Reading – you will develop your skills in reading and responding to a range of texts based around real-life situations.
- Writing – the course focuses on developing your ability to write clear, concise, and effective messages in English. You will learn how to write both formally and informally.
You will be assessed by exams in each of the three subject areas: speaking and listening, reading, and writing – which take place at key points throughout the year.
This isn’t anything to worry about – we will run revision sessions in the build up to exams.
