If you’re a creative thinker who loves drawing, designing, or making, this course is the perfect first step into the world of art and design. You’ll explore a wide range of exciting techniques, build your artistic confidence, and develop the practical skills needed to progress into higher-level creative courses or start your journey toward a career in the creative industries.
Course Overview
This one-year Level 1 Art & Design Certificate introduces you to the foundations of creative practice. You’ll try out a wide range of art and design disciplines, experiment with materials, and learn the basics of visual communication. Whether you’re interested in fine art, fashion, digital design, crafts, illustration, or photography, this course helps you discover your strengths and interests.
You’ll study at Knightstone Campus, home to specialist art and design studios equipped with everything you need – from drawing spaces and craft tools to digital design resources. Our industry-experienced lecturers will support you in developing your creative ideas, building a portfolio, and gaining the confidence to express yourself through your work.
As part of our Creative Arts Career Excellence Hub, you'll also benefit from employer links, creative briefs, and additional workshops that help prepare you for progression into Level 2 and beyond.
What will I study?
You’ll explore a broad mix of creative skills through engaging and practical units such as:
- Drawing and illustration techniques
- 2D and 3D design
- Painting, mixed media and collage
- Photography and digital image making
- Craft and model-making
- Exploring materials, processes and visual language
- Developing a personal project
- Creating a portfolio of work
- Personal and professional development
These units build your technical skills while helping you learn how to plan, reflect on, and present your creative ideas.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed entirely through coursework, which may include:
- Sketchbooks
- Practical projects
- Portfolio submissions
- Research and idea development
- Presentations
- Final pieces based on creative briefs

Entry Requirements
- At least five GCSEs at grades 3–1, with at least two at grade 3, or completion of a pre-vocational programme
- A passion for art and a creative portfolio of work
