Demand for SEND provision continues to grow locally and nationally.

Weston College currently supports:

 • More than 3,000 learners with a declared learning difficulty or disability
 • Approximately 445 learners with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
 • Approximately 545 High Needs learners

To meet this growing demand and improve learner outcomes, we are investing in people, facilities and new ways of working.

This includes:

 • A £3 million investment in specialist SEND facilities
 • Expansion of residential and independent living provision
 • Increased frontline learner support
 • Greater specialist SEND expertise
 • Enhanced support across all campuses
 • New career pathways and progression opportunities

This is not simply about growing services. It is about ensuring every learner has the opportunity to achieve, progress and thrive.

Weston College is investing over £3 million to create a dedicated SEND Centre for Residential Training and Independent Living.

The new centre will support learners to develop the confidence, skills and independence needed for adult life.

Alongside this investment, we are creating a new model of SEND support focused on:

 • Improved learner outcomes
 • Greater inclusion across the College
 • Increased specialist expertise
 • Enhanced support for learners with autism, ADHD and other additional needs
 • Stronger pathways into adulthood and employment

This investment reflects our long-term commitment to creating outstanding opportunities for learners with SEND.

We believe great SEND professionals can come from many different backgrounds.

Some colleagues join us with extensive SEND experience. Others are taking their first step into specialist education and learner support.

What matters most is a commitment to improving outcomes for learners and a desire to continue learning and developing.

Where required for a role, employees may have the opportunity to undertake fully funded SEND qualifications, helping them develop specialist knowledge and build long-term careers within the sector.

Potential development opportunities may include:

 • Level 2 SEND qualifications
 • Level 3 SEND qualifications
 • Level 5 specialist SEND qualifications
 • Internal SEND CPD programmes
 • Specialist autism and neurodiversity training
 • Cross-college learning and development opportunities
 • Leadership and management development programmes

We want SEND at Weston College to be more than a job. We want it to be a career.

Jason representing Great Britain in American Football

The College is proud to announce that Jason Selormey, our Lead Practitioner for ADHD, has been again selected to represent Great Britain in the upcoming American Football European Championship qualifiers. Jason’s journey in international football began when he was just 17, and being chosen to compete on this stage once again is an honour he values deeply.

When asked how he felt about being selected to represent Great Britain, Jason said, "I felt really proud. I’ve been fortunate enough to compete at the international level since I was 17, and it is always very special for me." His passion for the sport and pride in representing his country remains as strong as ever, even after years of playing at the highest level.

The upcoming qualifiers will see Jason and his teammates start against some of the toughest competition in Europe. They will play against Sweden in Carlstadt, followed by a home game against Germany in Coventry. Reflecting on the challenge, Jason commented, "Both are really top teams with professional leagues, so we have our work cut out for us, but we’ve prepared well. We’re excited to show what we can do on the international stage."

For Jason, playing for the national team carries personal significance. "Before I was first selected to the Under 19 programme, I had just lost my mother, so she never got to see me play internationally. Every time I get to play for GB, it feels that much more special. It’s my way of showing her that her youngest son is doing what he loves," he shared. Professionally, this experience also contributes valuable lessons. "It gives me amazing insights into collaboration, personality management, and handling nerves. Whenever I have to deliver a big presentation at work, I always say it feels just like preparing for a big game."

Jason's role as a Lead Practitioner for ADHD also complements his involvement in sports. "The two are closer than people think," he explained. "Both roles require the ability to adapt to challenges and rely on a high level of emotional intelligence. My job is almost practice for what I do on game day, and vice versa!"

The College community has rallied behind Jason, offering support in various ways. "I've told my faculty and a few colleagues about it, and they’ve been incredibly supportive. We had a team Kickstarter, and it was heart warming to see people from the College donate. Everyone’s been wishing me luck, and it’s really nice to feel that support."

As Jason approaches the final two games of his career, he reflects on the incredible journey it’s been. "These will be the last two games of my career. I’ve been playing the sport for half my life, and I’ve been fortunate enough to play it at the professional and international levels. I’m incredibly grateful."

For those who want to support Jason in his final games, here is a link to his GoFundMe page: Support Jason’s Journey.

If you are passionate about education and are looking for an opportunity to join the staff team at a leading college, then look at the latest job vacancies available at Weston College here<strong>. “My journey started at Weston Bay, a residential training centre for students on the autism spectrum, before I progressed to study the Level 3 Health and Social Care Course. After completing that course, I began a Level 2 Customer Service Apprenticeship with the Weston College Reception team. Each stage built my confidence, resilience, and practical skills, preparing me for the workplace in ways I never thought possible.”

One Message, Different Voices

Take a look at this powerful film made by the staff of Weston College to show how important it is for everyone from different backgrounds to be included. The film shares heartfelt stories and interviews with a diverse group of staff, showing how accepting different identities and backgrounds can make a big difference. Its purpose is to encourage viewers to think about their own biases and work towards making our community more welcoming to all. We invite everyone, regardless of their background, to join us and be a part of our journey toward a more inclusive future.

Halo workplace logo

Our workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. In this workplace, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed.

The Lord-Lieutenant acts as His Majesty's representative in Somerset. As a champion of the community, they support charity work and volunteering while upholding the interests of the Crown.

After arriving at Weston College’s Knightstone Campus, the Lord-Lieutenant and his Deputy saw students who raised money for the Weston Hospice Enterprise Project. This project challenged our business learners to create products that could be sold to raise money for Weston Hospice. This project raised £7289.87 for the charity. The students showed off their business acumen and the products that they were selling.
<drupal-entity alt=""Business students showing their work"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="fcb7425f-b453-4d06-a48d-c019211c99e7" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

After this, the Lord-Lieutenant and his Deputy visited the <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/cours…; rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/cours…; target="_blank">Inclusive Practice department to discuss the support that students with Autism receive at the College’s <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/location/weston-bay" rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/location/weston-bay" target="_blank">Weston Bay, our residential training facility.
