Baylee

Baylee, winner of this year’s English Progress Award, is an inspirational student, lighting up the halls of Weston College with her infectious smile and unwavering spirit. Despite facing significant challenges due to her medical condition, Baylee's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and support.

At the age of 20, Baylee embarked on her educational journey at Weston College after enduring a three-year hiatus from schooling due to her debilitating condition, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). Despite facing rejection from other educational institutions, Baylee's tenacity led her to Weston College, where she not only conquered the obstacles posed by her condition but achieved admirable academic success.

Baylee's remarkable journey culminated in her achievement of a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification and Grade 5 in GCSE English. Reflecting on her journey, Baylee said, "I had 6 months to study and do my GCSE, and I am immensely proud of myself for achieving a 5 alongside achieving Level 2 Functional Skills."

Throughout her time at College, Baylee's resilience shone brightly as she navigated through pain and seizures, defying the odds with each step. "I faced challenges daily because of my conditions," Baylee shared. "But I pulled through and did not give up on achieving my goal."

Baylee acknowledges the unwavering support of her teachers, support workers, and peers, particularly that of her teacher, Tania, who provided guidance and belief when she needed it most. "She believed in me when I did not, and I do not think I would have passed without her", Baylee remarked.

Moving forward, Baylee is currently pursuing studies in Counselling, driven by her desire to support others facing similar challenges. "My future plan is to be a counsellor and help as many people as I can, spreading awareness of silent illnesses," Baylee shared.

Baylee's journey is proof of her determined spirit and serves as an inspiration to all. As she continues her path toward becoming a counsellor, her story reminds us that with determination and support, anything is possible
