Biscuits and Benches

Over three days, construction students built and donated handmade benches with college plaques to local care homes. They delivered them personally, bringing biscuits and spending time with residents. Additional benches were auctioned for charity, showcasing the students’ craftsmanship, generosity, and strong community spirit.

Construction learners recently benefited from a valuable industry-led session delivered by leading contractor Gilbert Ash.

The company visited campus last week to speak with students about site behaviour, safety expectations and the importance of maintaining professional standards on a modern construction site. The session aligned closely with current curriculum delivery, giving learners a clear link between classroom teaching and real-world practice.

Skills Bootcamp: ESOL Vocational – Construction

Improve your English, get your CSCS card, and start your construction career This fully funded 4-week Construction Skills Bootcamp helps ESOL learners gain the confidence, communication skills, and safety training required to begin work in the construction industry.

Participants will work toward obtaining their CSCS Green Card and engage directly with employers through site visits and a job interview at the end of the programme.

Site Carpentry, Diploma

This level 2 diploma is aimed at learners looking to work in the carpentry industry, the course is the perfect stepping-stone into a site carpentry career to give you the skills to work in the industry.

This qualification covers all the main skills and knowledge you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work as a site carpenter.

As a site carpenter you will learn the skills and knowledge to cut, fasten, shape and design objects made from timber products or other related materials. It is a fast faced industry, and you should be comfortable using a range of tools and processes.

This course assumes that you have some knowledge and skill level but if you don’t, it offers a safe environment to start understanding tools such as a sliding bevel.

You will gain an understanding of all the skills and knowledge relating to the industry by completing the following mandatory units:

  • Health and Safety (NOT THE CSCS COURSE)
  • Principles of construction · Structural Carpentry
  • Non-Structural Carpentry Prior To Plastering
  • Non-Structural Carpentry Following Plastering
  • Timber Technology
  • Safe Use Of A Circular Saw

    Assessment Method

You will be assessed through practical skill tests, work observations, assignments and online assessments.

Qualifications gained upon course completion

Level 2 Diploma – Site Carpentry (City & Guilds)

Next Steps and Progression After Course Completion

Following successful completion of this qualification you will be qualified to work in the construction industry as a carpenter. To work on larger construction sites, you may need to pursue a CSCS card (The Construction Skills Certification Scheme), but this is something that can be discussed with the tutors during the course.

Financing Your Course

At Weston College, we believe that learning should be accessible to everyone. That's why this course is fully-funded (free) for anyone 19+ from August 1st 2023.

Entry Requirements

A general understanding of the construction industry with an interest in carpentry and some basic hand skills. To be eligible for enrolment, candidates must hold at least a Level 2 qualification and have achieved a minimum grade 4 or C in both English and Maths.

Plastering, Diploma

Plastering is a highly sought-after, well-paid trade and this course will be your first step into gaining the skills and knowledge needed to be a plasterer. At this level you will learn about becoming a Plasterer and all the behaviours and skills you will need to become proficient in the following: ·

  • Health and Safety
  • Principles of Construction
  • Basic Application of Plaster to a Range of Surfaces
  • Basic Screeding
  • Basic Floating
  • Basic Finishing

Entry Requirements

Prior to commencing the trade specific training, you will undergo a skills assessment period to allow you to try some of the aspects of the course before committing further. This will allow tutors to measure your suitability to the course.

Assessments

This is an assignment- based course and there are no exams. You will be continually assessed by tutors throughout the programme and be required to produce certain pieces of work for them to mark.

Progression Opportunities

This course could lead to several introductory roles within the construction industry or support your aspirations to progress onto the technical skills (Level 2)

We ask that you provide your own safety boots and stationary.

CSCS Virtual

Gain the skills and qualifications needed to work as a labourer on a construction site! This course is for adults looking to start their journey into construction, by becoming a labourer.

Course Overview

On this course, you will have the opportunity to gain a CSCS Green Card (for labourers), which will increase your chances of gaining employment within the construction industry – with many construction companies only looking to hire people with a CSCS card.
