What will I study?

This is a one-year course that covers a wide range of subjects related to caring for children, such as:

  • Child development,
  • Play and Learning,
  • Health and Safety,
  • Healthy Lifestyles.

Opportunities on this course include:

Improving your employability skills through engaging with weekly professional practise sessions. These sessions allow learners to learn the basic skills of an early years practitioner. Learners will look at how to set up age-appropriate activities for children of various ages.

You will also support half termly stay and play sessions within the local community. These sessions will be planed, resourced and lead by the learners. This involves meeting parents/caregivers of local children. Learners will also be preparing the snacks for the children.

Once you are confident- you will attend one day per week in an education setting.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through written coursework, presentations and practical experiences.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have attempted their GCSEs, achieving 5 GCSEs at grades 3–1 (including at least two at grade 3), with good school attendance up to the end of Year 11, and a keen interest and knowledge in the subject area.

Progression

This programme is a stepping stone to further education at level 2, a traineeship or an apprenticeship. ##Timetable

Learners are expected to attend four full days at college. This includes English and Maths. Learners will also attend one placement day per week. (These are block placements throughout the year) Learners will be released from college for one week to be solely at their placement.

Additional Information

Uniform

Uniform consisting of a Weston College polo top must be worn to placement and any stay & Play sessions within the college. Uniform must be purchased before the October half term. Alternatively, if learners are receiving bursary, curriculum can put in an order for them. (Bursary must have been applied for and awarded)

DBS Check

DBS Check Paid for by the college.

Learners must provide two references and a letter from their school before they are allowed on to their placements. These can be brought along to the DBS workshops.

Curriculum are running DBS workshops during the summer that learners can attend to make sure their DBS is completed before they start their courses. Learners need to bring three pieces of evidence, one of which must have a photograph (Driving license or passport). The others can be bank statement and birth certificate.
