Course Overview
Across this one-year, workshop-focused programme, you’ll learn the core engineering practices used across manufacturing, mechanical, electrical, and maintenance disciplines. This course is ideal if you enjoy practical work, problem-solving, and working with tools and machinery.
Based at our South West Skills Campus, you’ll train in a purpose-built environment designed specifically for engineering, construction and technical education. The campus features industry-standard workshops, specialist engineering classrooms, and fully equipped labs that mirror real workplace settings. You’ll also benefit from large open-plan computer suites ideal for developing your CAD, programming and simulation skills. This high-tech, career-focused environment ensures you gain the practical experience and industry readiness needed to succeed in the engineering sector.
You will be guided by expert lecturers with extensive industry experience who will help you develop the skills to work safely, accurately, and professionally – just as you would in a real engineering environment.
As a member of our Engineering Career Excellence Hub, you’ll have opportunities to take part in employer-led projects, visits, and demonstrations that bring engineering to life and help you understand the range of careers available in this dynamic sector.
What will I study? You will study a mix of practical and theory-based units, including:
- Working safely and effectively in an engineering environment
- Using and communicating technical information
- Engineering hand-fitting techniques
- Fabrication and welding skills
- Using power tools and industrial equipment
- Basic electrical wiring and testing
- Engineering maintenance and assembly
- Producing and interpreting engineering drawings

Entry requirements
- A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 3 or above, with at least two at grade 4
