Course Overview

The Plastering Technical Diploma is a two-year, full-time course delivered at Weston College in purpose-built workshops. You will be guided by experienced tutors who bring real-world industry knowledge to the classroom.

The course focuses on practical plastering skills while also teaching the underpinning theory of materials, surface preparation, and construction practices. Work experience opportunities give you valuable exposure to live construction environments.

Training takes place at Weston College’s South West Skills Campus, where purpose-built workshops, an industry-standard materials testing lab, outdoor construction arenas, and modern tools and software create a real-world learning environment. You’ll also benefit from work experience opportunities to gain practical insight into the construction industry. As a student, you will automatically join our Construction Career Excellence Hub, providing access to employer networking, industry visits, guest lectures, and career-focused activities to ensure you are fully prepared for your next steps. This course equips you not just with plastering skills, but with the broader knowledge and confidence needed for a successful career in construction.

What will I study?

  • Health and safety in construction, with a focus on plastering environments
  • Preparation of surfaces for plastering
  • Mixing and applying plaster and render, including fibrous, pargeting, and dry lining techniques
  • Application of traditional and modern plastering methods
  • Advanced plastering tools, equipment, and techniques
  • Finishing, decorative, and complex plasterwork patterns
  • Constructing intricate plastering structures for construction projects
  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings and specifications for plastering
  • Introduction to construction materials, principles, and relevant mathematics and English skills
  • Advanced finishing, maintenance, and industry-standard practices

Entry requirements

  • Bricklaying Level 1
  • GCSEs at grades 9–3, including English and maths
  • A keen interest in construction and practical work

Throughout the course, you’ll have the opportunity to improve your maths and English skills. If you haven’t already achieved a Grade 4 GCSE or Level 2 Functional Skills, additional support will be provided to meet apprenticeship requirements.
