This two-year course is ideal for students passionate about sports and human performance, combining theory and practical skills in areas like anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, coaching, and sports therapy.
You’ll gain hands-on experience running a sports science and therapy clinic, complete work placements, and be assessed through exams, coursework, and practical activities, preparing you for degree-level study or careers in sports therapy, conditioning, analysis, or psychology.
What will I study?
- 2 years – This course has been developed in consultation with employers and professional bodies and will cover a wide range of units to develop your knowledge in all areas of sport therapy
- This course is a career focused pathway where you will explore various aspects of human performance, including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and nutrition
- Through the development of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, you will gain a deep understanding of how the body responds and adapts to physical activity and exercise
- Units may include functional anatomy, nutrition for sport and exercise, coaching for performance and fitness, sports massage, and sports technology
- Additionally, you will develop your skills, knowledge, and behaviours through the running of a fully functioning sports science and therapy clinic
- You will be assessed through exams, coursework, presentations, and practical activities
- Work placement – 74 hours each year. Can be in anything sport related (subject to college approval)
How will you be assessed?
- 4 exams over the two years – the 1st year exams will be sat in May and the 2nd year in January
Entry Requirements
L3 Sports Therapy and Ex Science
- You will need five GCSEs at grade 9-4 including English and science (at least one science at a 4, English lang is a compulsory 4, English lit is not an essential)
L3 Sports Coaching and Performance
- You will need five GCSEs at grade 9-4 including Maths or English
Progression
- Degree study, Employment
- This programme will enable you to progress onto a degree in Sport Studies or Sport Studies (Football) at University Centre Weston
- Additionally, you can progress to university to study sports science and therapy related fields, or gain employment in a variety of areas, including therapy, strength and conditioning, sports science, sports analysis and sports psychology
- Curriculum advises that Sports Science is more suitable for learners looking to go into the University route. If they are looking to do physiotherapy for example, that does require a degree
Uniform Information
- Learners are expected to buy a couple of items of kit for practical lessons or when they are representing the college
- Learners will be provided with a kit list at enrolment with a link to purchase from NK sports

Timetable
- L3 Sports Science are not in on a Wednesday
- L3 Coaching and L2 are in every day
- Maths and English are Thu and Friday morning for L2 (could change)
- Wednesdays are fixture days. Across college Wednesday afternoons tend to be free

Academy
- Male and female football
- Male and female rugby

- Students can do multiple sports (for example, football and then cricket)
- All teams play in regional leagues which are played on a Wednesday afternoon
- The football academy are a performance team who also have under 18 and under 19 teams which play evenings
- The rugby academies take part in regional tournaments and the Rosslyn Park 7s tournament
- Training is every Monday at 3:15 and Wednesday afternoons are fixtures or training if there is no game
- The male football academy also train at 3:15 on Fridays
- All academies are based at HALSC (Health and Living Skills Centre) except for the male football which is at the football club
- All are welcome to trial and join and there will be more information in induction week (Trials for next academic year are on the 15th November, and then again in the new year, Trials DO NOT mean commitment to the college)
- Trials for football are for those not already involved with Weston FC
- Teams that college play: College side – AOC South West league – Local college sides such as Richard Huish, Bridgwater, SGS
- Under 18s – Floodlit league – Teams such as Clevedon, Portishead, Paulton
- Under 19s – National league – Teams such as Dorking, Basingstoke, Poole Town
