Jet2 Guest Talk

Jet2</a> recently visited our <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin…; and <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/trave… and Tourism learners to deliver an insightful guest talk about careers in the aviation industry. The three members of Jet2 staff provided in-depth information on what it's like to work at<a href="https://jet2careers.com/"> Jet2, along with valuable advice and guidance on how students can begin applying and make a strong first impression.

The guest talk started out with each Jet2</a> staff member giving an introduction to themselves and their career journey at Jet2</a>, as well as an overview of facts about<a href="https://jet2careers.com/"> Jet2 as a company. The learners were then quizzed on which airports in the country Jet2</a> are based at, testing the learner's memories of the airport 3-letter codes! The guest talk then covered the different types of roles which learners could apply for, including Cabin Crew, Luggage Handling, Passenger Service Agents, Customer Operations etc. This allowed the learners to open their eyes to the wide range of opportunities in aviation, as many had only previously considered Cabin Crew!

The learners were given key information about the benefits they receive if they work for Jet2</a>, such as the hourly rate, discounts on holidays and flights, and they reiterated how working for<a href="https://jet2careers.com/"> Jet2 means there is always opportunity to move around different roles. The guest talk also highlighted what the learners can expect during their training at Jet2</a>, such as when they would be required to take exams, the duration of the training, and the support they would be receiving around this time before starting their role.

When the students were asked whether they perform better with practical work compared to academic tasks, every learner raised their hand; Jet2</a> responded by highlighting that this is ideal for roles within their company, where hands-on experience plays a key role in professional development! The students had the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback, leading to the decision that it would be beneficial for Jet2</a> to return to the college for a day of ‘Mock Interviews’. This will allow our learners to practice and prepare for their real interviews.

The guest lecture was extremely informative, and we would like to thank Jet2</a> for taking the time to come and speak to our learners.

To find out more about our Business courses, <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin… here, and to find out more about our Travel and Tourism courses, <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/trave… here.

Recently, our second year Level 3 <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/trave…; rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/trave…; target="_blank">Travel and Tourism learners took a trip to the Mendip Activity Centre to provide a more hands-on and immersive learning experience for the students.

This trip coincided perfectly with one of their recent modules, Managing Accommodation, as it gave the learners insight into a local attraction that offers various on-site accommodation such as a campsite and lodges.

Throughout the day, students were able to explore the facilities that the Mendip Activity Centre had to offer, but also learn how they make their accommodation inclusive to all guests and how they run the business as a whole.

Mendip Activity Centre works with many schools and education groups, as well as the public, to provide outdoor education and activities, from skiing and snowboarding, to archery and orienteering. The business has so much to offer and has gradually developed and expanded over time to form the multi-activity centre with on-site accommodation that they are today.
<drupal-entity alt=""Travel and tourism learners posing with a worker at Mendip Activity Centre"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="0581af49-f04b-429a-ba48-db3b102c3918" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

George Coombe, the head of business and growth at Mendip Activity Centre, talked to the learners about the business, explaining everything from their development as a business and marketing strategies, to their available activities and accommodation. He then took the students on a tour of the centre so they could see the facilities first-hand and answer any questions they had throughout the day.

Hannah Carstensen, one of our Business and Tourism lecturers at Weston College, said, “George was able to give an insight into the accommodation sector of Travel and Tourism which closely links to what we have been covering within class. Learners were able to see how a local business manages multiple different accommodation services and how they meet the needs of their guests.”

Learners then had a game of frisbee golf that the Mendip Activity Centre offers as an activity which they enjoyed thoroughly and was a great way to end the day.

Overall, this trip provided our learners with real-life experience and gave them a comprehensive understanding of the industry's core principles, including customer service, destination knowledge, and the importance of sustainable tourism practices that the business developed overtime.

Thank you to George Combes and the Mendip Activity Centre for having us and educating our learners on how they run a successful, local business.

<a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/trave…; rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/trave…; target="_blank">If you’re interested in applying to one of our Travel and Tourism courses in September, click here.

Charlie stood at front of classroom delivering a guest talk

Just before the Easter holidays, our Travel and Tourism learners were treated to a guest lecture from the Economic Development Officer at North Somerset Council, Charlie Orr.

Learners found out all about the visitor economy of Weston-super-Mare, which attracts around 750,000 visitors each year.

Charlie covered the strategic objectives for the Council, Explore North Somerset, as well the importance of partnerships, and how they work with key tourism organisations such as Visit West, Visit Somerset and Visit Weston-super-Mare.

As well as an exciting current job, Charlie previously worked for Insight Japan which allowed him to travel and gain a variety of experiences, which he shared with learners, who were particularly interested. Learners also found out about the career opportunities within the industry, which was highly inspiring, as well top tips and advice on how to gain employment within travel and tourism.

A big thank you to Charlie for coming in, and we look forward to working closely together over the coming months with some of Explore North Somerset’s events.
