Catering/restaurant manager, kitchen assistant, kitchen manager, food and beverage assistant, commis chef, chefs de partie, sous chef, chefs de cuisine.

What you can earn

Some suggested annual salary ranges for those working in the industry include:

  • Commis chef £13,000 (starting salary)
  • Chefs de partie £12,000-£16,000
  • Sous Chef £16,000-£22,000
  • Chefs de cuisine £22,000-£30,000
  • Head chef £30,000+

Local notes

There are approximately 53,000 people working in the restaurant industry in this region. Between 2009 and 2011 the average household in the South West spent £37.30 a week on restaurants and hotels.

  • Front of house £17,000-£21,000
  • Assistant restaurant/catering manager £18,000-£25,000
  • Restaurant/Catering manager £25,000-£40,000
  • Small hotel manager £20,000-£35,000
  • General manager £35,000-£60,000

Local notes

Hotel and restaurant businesses are very successful in the South West region. This is due partly to the coastal resorts in the areas, where tourism and hospitality are extremely important to the local economy. There are approximately 19,600 people working in the hospitality services industry in this region, of which 52% work full-time.
