It will then continue on along Baytree Road and the Upper Bristol Road, before reaching the town centre via Alfred Street.

Service 51, 51s (becomes Service 125, 51s) Weston-super-Mare – Wrington

This North Somerset contracted route will have significant changes. The 51 will be renumbered 125, the 51s will remain as the 51s. The 125 will no longer serve Locking Parklands and instead serve Locking Village on the 2-hourly timetable. The service will also no longer serve The Runway/Haywood Village, instead additionally serving Flowerdown Retail Park in and out of Weston-super-Mare. In the town centre, the service will no longer run via the Railway Station forecourt.

As a result of parent and pupil safety concerns, there will be a 3.45pm service departing from the Churchill Academy school grounds for pupils travelling to Locking and Weston-super-Mare.

Service 7 will be extended to Locking Parklands as a more frequent replacement for this area (please see above). Service 125 can still be caught from nearby bus stops at Old Banwell Road/Elborough Turn.

Service X1 Asda & Bournville – Weston-super-Mare – Bristol

Service X1 will run more frequently - now every 15 minutes all through the day on weekday daytimes.

At Weston-super-Mare, it will be extended beyond the town centre (Marine Parade) to replace the existing service 3 route through Bournville to Searle Crescent, picking up the existing service 3 route from Clevedon Road. It will terminate at Asda having come via Marchfields Way and Winterstoke Road to avoid peak time congestion. The 15 minute frequency means that Bournville will benefit from more frequent buses than before, as well as the service running much later into the evening than the 3.

Service X5 Weston-super-Mare – Clevedon – Portishead

Between Clevedon and Worle, the X5 will now serve Yatton and Congresbury rather than taking its existing route via the M5. This sees a restoration of bus services to Yatton, and increases the journey opportunities available on service X5.

The X5 will also serve the South Road area of Weston-super-Mare at the start of most trips to Portishead, providing a link from South Road to town, and journey opportunities onto Yatton, Clevedon and Portishead.

Baylee collecting her GCSE grades

Learners from Weston College picked up their GCSE Maths and English results this morning.

Each year Weston College welcomes a combination of new learners to the College and returning learners, to obtain the grade C/4 required to progress further in their education.

Learners demonstrated remarkable dedication and perseverance, proving that it is never too late to pursue academic excellence and unlock new opportunities.

These results are a huge cause for celebration, and go to show how Weston College supports its learners to achieve.

One of the tremendous success stories from the day, is Baylee, who moved to Weston to go to Weston College and gained her English GCSE:

“I am very happy with my results – and delighted to pass! I wouldn’t have been able to go to college, if it wasn’t for Weston College.

“Now that I have my GCSE in English, I am going on to study counselling, because I really want to help people, like people have helped me.”

Good luck to Baylee on her next step!

Reuben achieved a grade 9 in his English GCSE: “I am very shocked at my GCSE English result – I really didn’t think I would get this result, so I am extremely happy.

“This qualification will help me to achieve my long-term dream of being a music teacher or a music therapist.

“The staff at Weston College were really helpful. I have dyspraxia, so they supported me with getting a laptop, and using coloured paper which has made a big difference to me. I am so glad and thankful for the support I received.”

Good luck Reuben!

Jacqui Ford and Sir Paul Phillips standing in front of Creating Brighter Futures sign

The Board of Governors at Weston College is pleased to announce the appointment of Jacqui Ford as the new Acting Principal and Chief Executive, effective from September 1st, 2023. This appointment follows the exceptional leadership and legacy of Sir Paul Phillips CBE, who has steered the institution towards remarkable achievements over the past 22 years and who retires at the end of August 2023.

Jacqui Ford is a former recent Deputy Principal of Weston College and many in the Weston College community are familiar with Jacqui's dynamic leadership, which contributed significantly to the advancement of Adult Education, Partnerships, and the SEND curriculum during her tenure as Deputy Principal. With nearly two decades of collaboration alongside Sir Paul Phillips, and a wide remit of experience across many different curriculum areas, Jacqui embodies the same ethos and approach that has defined Weston College’s success, instilling a sense of confidence in the path that lies ahead.

The Governors have also worked collaboratively with the senior Weston College team to establish a robust acting management structure that builds upon strength from within the institution to support Jacqui in her new role. The guidance of Sir Paul has been instrumental in shaping this new management framework.

Since 2001, Weston College has thrived under the visionary leadership of Sir Paul Phillips CBE. The College has witnessed unprecedented growth, from a turnover of £8 million to an impressive £75 million, all achieved without mergers. Situated in the heart of Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, Weston College stands as a beacon of excellence, offering education and vocational training to over 30,000 learners throughout the South West. This includes a diverse range of higher education courses through University Centre Weston, more than 50 distinct apprenticeships spanning from intermediate to degree level, and a robust presence in prisons across the South West region.

The Chair of the Governing Body reflected on the transformative impact of Sir Paul Phillips CBE's leadership, stating, "It has been a true honour to have had Sir Paul lead us as our Principal and Chief Executive. Under his guidance, Weston College has not only achieved 'Outstanding' status but has also garnered numerous prestigious awards and accolades that underscore its commitment to excellence. It is rare to see a college with both outstanding curriculum and finances.”

The Board of Governors wishes to express its pride in Weston College's continued expansion and articulates its optimism for the future. "With the announcement of Jacqui as our new Acting Principal and our exceptional staff, we are confident that we will continue to chart a course that focusses on our learners, employees, and the exciting skills agenda ahead.”

Weston College looks forward to embracing this new chapter under Jacqui Ford's leadership, honouring the legacy of Sir Paul Phillips CBE, and advancing its mission of providing excellence in education and vocational training by continuing to create brighter futures.

Hannah, T Level learner standing in the Early Years Centre

In a resounding testament to educational excellence, Weston College's T Level learners have achieved an extraordinary 100% pass rate this year – outshining the national pass rate of 90.5%.

T Levels, introduced as a new technical qualification pathway, emphasise a blend of classroom learning and practical experience, making Weston College's achievement even more noteworthy.

The achievement of a flawless pass rate is a reflection of the dedication put forth by students and the unwavering support provided by staff at Weston College.

Sandra Bull, Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Cross College T Level Lead, at Weston College, said: “We are so proud of our T Level learners, and the amazing results that they have achieved – bucking the national trend!

“The results demonstrate the hard work and commitment of our students, staff and also the employer partners who play such an important role in the T Level journey for our learners.

“Our learners are now progressing onto their next stage, which looks different for each learner, with some progressing to university, some going on to complete degree apprenticeships and others going straight into their chosen industry.

“These results, and the feedback we are receiving, demonstrate the impact that T Levels can have and is having on creating the next generation of skilled employees for the evolving demands of the modern workforce.”

One of the driving forces behind this remarkable success is the college's emphasis on putting the learner first. Weston College is renowned for its student-centred approach, ensuring that each individual's unique strengths are harnessed and that support is on hand to support learners in any way that is needed. The dedicated teaching staff, equipped with a wealth of expertise, have played a pivotal role in shaping students into confident, knowledgeable professionals ready to make a meaningful impact.

Hear from some of the learners, and the impact T Levels has had on them, below.

The terms “neurodiversity” or “neurodivergent” is often a topic of conversation for those with a responsibility to build a diverse workforce in businesses, but what does it mean?

Lynsey Mckinstry profile photo

The reality is that everyone is different... and there is no single way in which we should think, learn and behave.

Neurodiversity, as a concept, describes these differences and their challenges, but also strengths. Neurodivergence is a term originally attributed to sociologist Judy Singer from the 1990s, and it’s a term used to described people with neurodiverse conditions such as autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia and ADHD amongst others.

  • In the UK, around 15-20% of the population are thought to be neurodivergent
  • In the UK, 29% of autistic adults are employed, according to 2021 data from the Office for National Statistics
  • The British Dyslexia Association estimates that around 10% of the UK population is dyslexic.

65% of neurodivergent employees don’t disclose their conditions to employers out of fear of discrimination (Birkbeck’s Research Centre for Neurodiversity at Work, 2023).

This tells me that too many neurodivergent people in the workforce do not tell their employer that they need support, so managers in businesses need to be given the training and confidence to make reasonable adjustments. Furthermore, a shockingly low percentage of people with autism are in employment.

The team at Weston College and I sat down a year ago and just felt something needed to change. So what did we decide to do?

As a national SEND Centre of Excellence, the College supports over 1,000 neurodivergent students each academic year. We’re experts in this field. We spoke to local employers and asked them what they wanted us to do, and they told us.

We created a series of 1 day, informal but informative workshops a year ago, delivered by highly skilled and experienced neurodivergent and inclusion specialists working at Weston College, alongside some online 'Lunch and Learn' sessions. 7 workshops and 2 lunch and learns later, we have trained 200+ managers for local businesses to be neurodiversity confident. We’ve had law firms, construction, theatres, engineering and media businesses. The impact has seen employers make reasonable adjustments in their businesses for their staff and customers.

Puxton Park was one of the employers who attended the training, and following the workshop, introduced an access card scheme for neurodiverse and disabled visitors to aid communication of a person’s needs and act as proof of access requirements. They also now provide Ear Defenders, free of charge to visitors.

Georgina Francis, Operations Manager of Puxton Park, says: “Being an inclusive attraction has always been extremely important to us. We have worked closely with Weston College and have had the privilege of taking part in their neurodiversity training workshops. This training was enlightening and informative and opened our eyes to the opportunities and initiatives we can take part in to best support the disabled and neurodiverse communities.”

We’re not stopping there. We aim to double number of workplace managers we train in the 23/24 academic year.

We're also offering Conscious Inclusion training which will explore Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) delivered by highly experienced and specialist staff with lived experience. The one-day training supports employers to listen to voices lesser-known, as well as suggesting ways to create an improved culture of inclusion for marginalised groups in the workplace. This workshop is a must attend for anyone looking to celebrate diversity in their organisation. The workshop will deliver impactful sessions around LGBTQ+ Inclusive Language & Issues, Anti-Racism, Trauma-Informed Approaches and how to welcome Sensory Differences.

I’ll finish where I started... everyone is different.

By working together, we can raise awareness and train people to make reasonable changes and maximise the talent that we have in our region.

Employers interested in the training can contact me at lynsey.mckinstry@weston.ac.uk or visit our website here.

It runs on mobile devices as an app but is also available on desktop devices within the college network. There are loads of features for learners on the app including access to their timetables, instant college news, up-to-date events, online learning, support services, and much more. The app also integrates with several of the college's other systems which means that the app will be a one-stop shop for all the information about the college.

Please check your child has downloaded it.

Travelling to college – get your child’s bus pass now!

Getting to Weston College is easy, as all three of our main campuses have great transport links across the region and are all easily accessible by road, train, and bus.

Most of our new students who join us from school travel to college by bus and we, therefore, subsidise over 50% of the cost of any of our bus passes.

These are now available to purchase now, and your child will have the choice of two passes, depending on where you live and how often they travel to and from college campuses.

All information and how to purchase them can be found by clicking here.

New freedoms and responsibilities

College timetables (or learning schedules as we call them) are significantly different from school and can take some time to get used to. Your child may not need to attend college every day and their day will be longer, with some classes ending in the late afternoon.

Students will have free periods to complete coursework, do research, or revise and we always encourage them to manage their time appropriately and proactively. However, there is also time for volunteering, part-time paid work, or for interests such as sports, drama, or music. We also have a very active Students’ Union, which promotes various opportunities and other clubs, trips, and activities.

Our students continuously tell us how they appreciate being treated as adults. A big part of this is taking responsibility for their learning and they will be given more freedom than they experienced at school. But with freedom comes responsibility! Your child will be asked to sign and acknowledge our behaviour policy and code of conduct to help ensure our core value of Respect is upheld by everyone. We expect our students to display the same behaviour you’d find in any workplace and our proud to model our curriculum on the ethos ‘Ready to Learn, Ready for Work, Ready for Life’.

Unique opportunities to develop professional skills…

As an award-winning college, our teaching goes beyond the curriculum to develop your child’s knowledge, skills, and behaviours to put them in the best possible position to achieve their career aspirations. We focus our curriculum on the following components:

  1. Position employers and partners at the centre of our curriculum design and delivery, which will maximise career opportunities, and progression and enhance the academic experience, by providing up-to-the-minute industry knowledge and expertise, thus ensuring any learner is an attractive future asset regardless of destination or progression path.
  2. Significant investment in real-world learning using industry-standard state of art facilities, to bridge the skills gap for the regional economy, at the same time creating opportunities for learners to engage in real-world learning outside the classroom including industry placement, enrichment opportunities, and exposure to wider employers through masterclasses, trips, and visits.
  3. Embed an inclusive approach across all we do and with everyone we work with. This will achieve an inclusive talent pipeline through embedding inclusive learning opportunities within each programme, giving learners the opportunity to learn from each other and the wider community.
  4. Develop leaders of the future by providing all students with the platform to deliver positive change within wider society, with a key focus on social action and sustainability.
  5. Create ambition and promote the development of career management skills through a planned careers programme and offer, including access to expert advisors ensuring that all learners are equipped with the tools to make an informed decision about their next steps to university, employment, or further programmes. Our approach to careers is already highlighted as a leading example within the college sector.

Learners Celebrating their A Level Results, holding up their papers with Sir Paul Phillips stood in the middle.

Students studying A Levels, Vocational subjects, and T Levels at Weston College celebrate outstanding grades on results day 2023.

Results at Weston College were yet again very impressive for learners across the campuses of the College Group. The new T Levels included the subject disciplines of Health, Engineering, Education & Early Years. Digital, Design, and Construction achieved a 100% pass rate with 77% of learners achieving the highest grades.

T Levels are qualifications for 16- to 19-year-olds, taken after GCSEs. They are broadly equivalent in size to 3 A Levels and focus on technical and vocational skills. They can help students into skilled employment, higher study, or apprenticeships.

Similarly, for A Levels, 100% pass rates were realised in Computer Science, Economics, English, French, Media, Photography, Textiles, Criminology, IT, and Sport with Polish and Russian scoring 100% A*-B!

The College also witnessed hundreds of students achieving their vocational qualifications, in Animal Management, Business, Construction, Creative Arts, Education, Hair and Beauty, Health and Social Care, Hospitality and Catering, Motor Vehicle, Public Services, and Sport.

Weston College Group Principal and Chief Executive Sir Paul Phillips CBE said:

“These results are a testament to the hard work and diligence of both staff and students and reflect yet again a superb progression to Higher Education and employment”.

“At Weston College, you’re not just taught how to pass an exam. Our focus looks not only on the present, but the future too with a key focus on kickstarting incredible careers. Our study programmes raise aspirations, and we work alongside industry to prepare students for their next step – whether that’s a Degree, Higher Apprenticeship, or the world of work.

“A massive congratulations and thank-you to the cohort of 2023. I wish each learner every success in their onward journey.”

A Level student Harrison Byrom who picked up his results today commented:

"It's an incredible feeling to have achieved A* in English Language and Literature, A in History, B in Politics, and an A in my EPQ. These results have opened the door for me to pursue my passion for History at Oxford University. For me, Weston College has an environment that is so much more enriching than traditional school settings, and the curriculum content has been an absolute blast to engage with. My time here has truly helped shape my character, pushing me to grow and evolve. I'm amazed at the brilliant friendships I've forged along the way. Weston College has been a pivotal chapter in my educational journey, and I can't wait to see where the next one at Oxford takes me."

Also, Iona Chambers was delighted with her results, which she collected from Loxton Campus with her Mum, Iona said:

“I am absolutely thrilled with my results and couldn't be happier. Achieving Criminology A*, Biology A, and English Literature B is a dream come true. My journey at Weston College has been nothing short of amazing. The support I received from the teachers and the Autism Hub has been incredible. After my GCSEs, I wasn't certain if A Levels were the right path for me, but from the moment I stepped into the College, I was embraced with warmth, encouragement, and unwavering support from everyone around me. I am particularly grateful to Jude and Nadine from the support team who have been absolutely incredible. With this solid foundation, I am eagerly looking forward to the next chapter of my education, studying Conservation and Archaeology at Cardiff University.”

T Level student in Education and Early Years, Hannah Morris picked up her results today and said:

“I am really happy with the results I have received today. I feel really grateful to all my tutors at the College who really encouraged me and helped me reach my goal. The T Level course has really helped boost my confidence and make me the person I am today. With this qualification, I can now continue to pursue my career within a local nursery.

T Levels are backed by employers and also contain 315 hours of an Industry Placement, which this year Bristol Port has given five Weston College T Level learners the opportunity to carry out their placements at the Port. David Brown, the Chief Executive Officer commented:

“The Bristol Port Company are passionate about developing future talent within our business and we have hosted T Level students from Weston College on their industry placement this year. The students have worked closely with our team and have made a positive impression. It’s good to see the new employer-led T Level courses giving young people the technical skills and practical experience they need for the workplace, supported by Weston College.”

The College’s Vocational qualifications were also outstanding this year. Business Extended Diploma student, Tallulah Stradling received the top grade and commented:

“I am really happy with my results! I can’t believe that I managed to get D*, D*, D*, and I am now off to Exeter University to study Law. I have really enjoyed my experience at Weston College – from the support to the course, it has been amazing.”

Overall, college results were exceptional with a similar set of outcomes to last year, albeit with a slight overall downward shift of 1%-2%. Sir Phillips added how pleased he was to see the take-up and advancement of T Levels reflecting their importance in curriculum delivery and learner progression.

Two people looking at car

In a remarkable display of dedication and excellence, the Head of Business at Mercedes Benz Weston-super-Mare, who has been with Sytner for 23 years and the Mercedes-Benz brand for nearly 25 years, lauds the impact of T Level learners since they joined the prestigious dealership in April 2023.

The T Level program, a recent addition to the educational landscape, has already made a significant difference at Sytner. The Head of Business couldn't be more proud of the T Level students who have seamlessly integrated into the team. Instead of merely feeling like students, they have proven themselves to be valuable assets to the business. From the initial interview stage to their present roles, these learners have demonstrated a fantastic work ethic and a positive attitude towards learning, customers, and the wider team at Mercedes Benz Weston-super-Mare.

During their industry placement at Sytner, the T Level learners have contributed to various projects and completed tasks across the dealership. They have not only gained practical experience but also developed essential skills that are hard to acquire in a traditional classroom setting. The dealership has provided them with an opportunity to excel in customer service, maintain professional standards, and learn about workplace expectations. Moreover, they have honed their problem-solving abilities and have learned to seek out solutions, expanding their perspectives on how actions and processes can impact outcomes in a real business environment.

The collaboration with Weston College has been instrumental in fostering this exceptional partnership. The Head of Business expresses gratitude for the opportunity to support and inspire future talent. The staff and students at Weston College have been welcoming and delightful in every interaction, fostering a productive and conducive learning environment.

When asked for advice to employers considering taking on T Level learners for industry placements, the Head of Business wholeheartedly recommends the experience. T Levels provide an excellent opportunity to spot and nurture future talent while actively participating in shaping young people's careers and lives.

The partnership between Mercedes Benz Weston-super-Mare and Weston College is set to flourish further, with both entities eagerly anticipating a continued collaboration. As the T Level learners continue to thrive and grow within the business, the future looks bright for this harmonious partnership that bridges education and industry seamlessly.

Two people standing arm in arm at the HGV careers fair

Last Tuesday Weston College hosted a careers fair for people that recently completed the HGV Skills Bootcamp, at the Construction Training Centre.

Attendees had the opportunity to meet organisations currently recruiting, such as, Turnbull Infrastructure & Utilities Ltd, SUEZ, Blue Arrow, AmeyBriggs, and Arthur David (Food with Service) LTD.

The event proved to be a huge success, with a significant number of participants securing interviews or driver assessments pre-hire. This positive outcome exemplified the impact of the college's driver training efforts in promoting real employment opportunities.

Louise Greene, Employer Partnership Manager at Weston College, said: “The HGV Careers Fair was a brilliant event, with so many positive outcomes.

“Being able to support people looking to retrain and enter a new industry is fantastic, but to also support them with then finding a job is what Weston College is all about!

“I would like to thank all the employers that attended; by collaborating, we can have a really positive impact on the local community. I would also like to wish all of the participants that gained interviews or driver assessments pre-hire the best of luck.

One Message, Different Voices

Take a look at this powerful film made by the staff of Weston College to show how important it is for everyone from different backgrounds to be included. The film shares heartfelt stories and interviews with a diverse group of staff, showing how accepting different identities and backgrounds can make a big difference. Its purpose is to encourage viewers to think about their own biases and work towards making our community more welcoming to all. We invite everyone, regardless of their background, to join us and be a part of our journey toward a more inclusive future.

Halo workplace logo

Our workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. In this workplace, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed.
