<p>An exciting new programme, ‘Ignite’ was launched for the first time this month, in partnership with Avon Fire and Rescue. This two-week dynamic, hands-on course was designed to boost confidence and equip our learners for their next steps, whether that be entering employment, pursuing further training, or focusing on personal development.</p><p>The learners engaged in various activities including:</p><ul><li><strong>Team building&nbsp;</strong></li><li><strong>Building self confidence&nbsp;</strong></li><li><strong>Goal setting&nbsp;</strong></li><li><strong>Communication skills&nbsp;</strong></li><li><strong>Visits to fire stations&nbsp;</strong></li><li><strong>Outdoor activities&nbsp;</strong></li><li><strong>Health and wellbeing</strong></li><li><strong>Cooking skills&nbsp;</strong></li><li><strong>Interview skills&nbsp;</strong></li><li><strong>Presentation skills</strong></li></ul><p>The learners made significant progress during the programme and worked together incredibly to achieve all tasks they were given.</p><p>On the final day of the programme, the learners participated in a live demo in front of spectators, where they were asked to create a water dam which would then be used to spray water out of a hosepipe. After the live demo, the learners presented in front of the spectators, discussing what they had been up to for the last few weeks, what they had learnt, and how the experience impacted them. Each learner spoke clearly and professionally, leaving a strong impression on all spectators.</p><p>Finally, the learners were presented with certificates to congratulate them on completing the programme!</p><p>Following the programme, learners had the opportunity to engage in one-on-one sessions with a tutor to discuss their next steps and explore how to achieve their goals. <p>Our HGV Bootcamp has had a profoundly inspiring impact on Andy, who has successfully transitioned into his dream career, showcasing the effectiveness of our training program.</p><p>Andy secured a position with Towens, a company he had strategically targeted during the career planning segment of our employability course.</p><p>Andy has shared his enthusiasm for his new career, crediting the HGV Bootcamp for his success:</p><p>“I excelled throughout the entire bootcamp and can't thank Weston College enough for the hard work you put in for all the students. The HGV Bootcamp provided a calm and clear learning environment. The day after I passed my test, I went straight to Towens. The following day, I spoke with the managers, and I started my training the day after that. I’m now fully employed as a Class 2 tipper driver for Towens, just as I set out to be. I absolutely love my new career. <p>My name is Gary, and I recently completed the adult <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-adults/electrical/ele… 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations.</a></p><p>May I start by saying; having been one of the eldest students on the course I found the thought of undertaking this course a little daunting. It has been a very long time since I was expected to study and undertake exams, assessments etc. From the first classroom session it was clear that the teaching staff were very good in their professional fields, their teaching techniques were second to none, they took time to explain lessons and more importantly actively encouraged questions, regardless of if it seemed daft or not. They would take time to deliver the question in a simpler form and patiently explain the outcome, making the whole process pleasurable (believe it or not).</p><p>The teaching staff would encourage a positive attitude when it came to undertaking essential exams to progress the course to the next stage. Those who were a little unfortunate to miss out on a pass would be offered additional help and reassured that the exam would be passed. They were very sympathetic and supportive if someone did not make the grade at that particular time, and the course candidates were actively encouraged to work together and help each other, which was very refreshing to see.</p><p>Again, Lee’s, Andy’s, and Mark’s knowledge in practical sessions greatly helped to get to the result, a pass on the course. No matter how many times things needed to be explained or demonstrated they would be patient and approach various ways to explain and demonstrate the task being undertaken. Their knowledge of electrical principles was outstanding and made the course even more enjoyable.</p><p>In my opinion they are an asset to Weston College, and with tutors of this calibre I can only see Weston College going very far in the education world. The commitment these staff have to get their students through the course is again outstanding, despite the long hours put in to deliver the course while teaching daytime students.</p>
