Qualifications Explained
At Weston College we know that everyone learns differently. That’s why we deliver a variety of different qualification types - to give you the chance to learn in the way that suits you the most.
A Levels
A Levels develop the knowledge, skills and study habits to excel at university, as well as the attributes recognised by employers. Your academic studies will be complemented with enrichment opportunities such as trips, mentoring and work experience, providing the perfect springboard for your future career. A Levels are assessed through exams at the end of two years of study. Most learners study three subjects - some choose four.
Apprenticeships
With an apprenticeship you’ll go straight into the workplace and be shown clear routes to progress straight into employment within a specific occupation. You can achieve nationally recognised qualifications, earn a wage, and gain skills that will see you get ahead. On average you will spend 20% of your learning time in the college and 80% within the workplace..
Professional and Technical Qualifications
Professional and technical qualifications are designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to gain employment within specific industries or occupations. They provide a balance between theory and practical skills development. They are suited to those who want to get hands-on experience within a particular vocational area. These programmes include work placements. Assessment is more varied and will include exams, coursework and practical work.
Traineeships
Traineeships are a great way for 16 to 24-year-olds who haven’t yet gained the skills and experiences necessary to apply for jobs and apprenticeships. They are taught mostly in the workplace and include a mixture of personal and social development, and employability skills. The aim of a traineeship is to train you within a company so that you are more likely to be offered an apprenticeship or a job.
T Levels give you the chance to learn what a real career is like while you continue your studies. T Levels have been designed with leading businesses and employers to give you the knowledge and skills you need, including a minimum of 45 days on an industry placement – this means you will spend 80% of your learning time in College and 20% within the workplace.

As the only education provider in North Somerset that enables you to work your way up from an entrylevel programme to a degree, we’re here to help you choose the right programme for you.

School Liaison Team
Working with local schools we help you find out about college life and programmes of study, and we provide you with advice and guidance about what programmes will best suit you. We will either visit your school, attend careers fairs and parents’ evenings or coordinate campus and virtual events such as our taster days, holiday workshops and tours.
Events
We put on a number of events over the year, which will be a mixture of face-to-face and virtual events. These provide you and your family with the opportunity to explore our facilities, speak to our lecturers, find out about the support on offer and choose the right programme for you. Our events also give you the opportunity to engage with a number of employers to find out about careers in their industry and why they value the calibre of candidates that come from Weston College.

<p data-pm-slice="0 0 []">Earlier this month, our <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/hair-…;, <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/beaut… Therapy</a>, and <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/hair-… Makeup and Prosthetics</a> students, alongside learners from the <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.ucw.ac.uk/courses/makeup-wigs-and-special-effects-ba-hons/"… BA(Hons) Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics for Production</a> degree, competed in the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) National Final in Blackpool after successfully progressing from the South West Regional competition.</p><p>The national event gave students the opportunity to showcase their talents against learners from across the country, applying their skills across a wide range of treatments, styles, and creative disciplines.</p><p>Students competed in a variety of categories, from classic blow-dries and intricate hairstyling themes to body painting, makeovers, and nail art. Each category challenged competitors to combine creativity, technical precision, and professionalism to produce high-quality work under pressure.</p><p>Following outstanding performances in the regional heats, several students advanced to the national final and achieved impressive results:</p><ul><li>Elora, a <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/hair-… 3 Theatrical, Special Effects, Prosthetics and Make-up Extended Diploma</a> learner, achieved 1st place in TV and Film Character Makeup.</li><li>Yana, a <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.ucw.ac.uk/courses/makeup-wigs-and-special-effects-ba-hons/"… BA(Hons) Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics for Production</a> student, achieved 1st place for her Banksy-inspired half body painting, as well as 3rd place in both Butterfly Body Paint and Magazine Front Cover Makeup.</li><li>Aimee, a <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/beaut… 2 Beauty Therapy</a> learner, secured 2nd place in Nails.</li><li>Janis, a <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/hair-… 3 Hairdressing</a> Adult learner, achieved 2nd place for her 1960s-inspired evening hairstyle.</li></ul><p>These fantastic results reflect not only the students’ talent and dedication, but also the hard work and preparation that went into the competition. Taking part in events like this helps students build confidence, develop resilience and adaptability, and gain valuable networking opportunities – all essential skills for working successfully with clients in the industry.</p><p>Competitions like this allow our learners to identify their strengths while receiving constructive feedback and guidance from industry professionals and peers. <p data-pm-slice="0 0 []">Earlier this month, our <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/apprenticeships/electrical-co… Installation Apprentice</a>, Gracie Donaghy, was named joint winner of the <strong>Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2026</strong> Award alongside another apprentice Petra O’Flaherty. Competing against more than 3,000 apprentices from across the UK and Ireland, Gracie successfully progressed through several challenging stages before being crowned one of just two winners.</p><p>The <strong>Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2026</strong> Award is an annual competition celebrating the most promising new talent within the trade industry across the UK and Ireland. The competition encourages apprentices to push themselves beyond their comfort zones, showcase their skills, and stand out among some of the industry’s brightest emerging professionals.</p><p>Throughout the application process, Gracie completed a series of written submissions, interviews, and practical workshops with major brands including DeWalt, Google, and Lego. She then advanced to the final stage, where she faced an interview panel made up of six industry specialists. Impressing the judges with her extensive knowledge, professionalism, and hands-on experience within the trade, Gracie secured the title of Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2026. Alongside this prestigious achievement, she received a prize package worth £10,000, including tools, training, and technology, as well as £2,000 worth of Screwfix vouchers for Weston College.</p><p>This latest success adds to an already impressive list of achievements for Gracie, who was also named <strong>SPARKS Female Skills Winner 2025</strong>. These accomplishments are a reflection of her dedication, precision, and strong work ethic. Taking part in competitions has also enabled her to network with employers, receive valuable feedback, and further develop her practical skills and industry knowledge. Competing alongside other talented apprentices has broadened her perspective and introduced her to new approaches within the trade, helping her continue to grow both personally and professionally.</p><p>Gracie Donaghy said:</p><p>“Winning this prestigious award is such a huge honour, and I am incredibly grateful to the team at Screwfix for giving me this opportunity. Earning the title of Screwfix Trade Apprentice, alongside the fantastic prizes, will massively benefit my career going forward, not only throughout the remainder of my apprenticeship, but also in my future career. It has also shown me that all my hard work is paying off.”</p><p>“I have always felt supported and encouraged throughout my time at Weston College to produce my best work. My lecturers have consistently motivated me to enter competitions to help build my confidence and allow me to recognise both my strengths and the areas where I can continue to improve. Without their ongoing support and encouragement, I would never have realised what I was capable of achieving.”</p><p>“I would encourage any apprentice considering entering a competition to go for it. You never truly know what you’re capable of until you put yourself out there. <p data-pm-slice="0 0 []">Weston College and Bristol Airport are proud to announce that 16 students from its Travel and Tourism Level 3 course have successfully secured employment at the Airport with easyJet, Jet2 and Swissport, marking an exciting milestone in their early careers</p><p>Bristol Airport have partnered with Weston College for a number of years offering students visits to the Airport to provide a hands-on approach and to raise awareness of careers in aviation, as well as inspiring the next generation. These visits provide exciting learning opportunities for students and allows them to a gain a behind-the-scenes tour on how the airport operates.</p><p>The students, who recently completed their studies, have moved straight into roles and have started their working careers at the largest airport in the South West and Wales. Their success highlights both the individual dedication and the strength of Weston College’s commitment to prepare learners for real world opportunities.</p><p>The Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism is a vocational qualification equivalent to three A-Levels, designed for students who want a broad understanding of the global Travel and Tourism industry. The course helps students develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours valued by employers and higher education providers.</p><p>Students study a wide range of units to reflect the diversity of the industry and to keep progression routes open. Key areas include global destinations, passenger transport, customer service, accommodation, business enterprise, airports and airline operations, marketing, events management and cruise tourism.</p><p><strong>Hannah Forrest, Course Co-Ordinator in Travel and Tourism at Weston College, said:</strong></p><p>“We have developed a strong and ongoing partnership with Bristol Airport, providing learners with valuable industry insight through organised visits, tours and taught sessions. These</p><p>experiences are crucial for our learners to allow to allow them to explore real working environments, understand operational roles, and engage directly with professionals at Bristol Airport.</p><p>As a direct result of this work, and the exposure gained through tours and classroom activities linked to Bristol Airport, 16 learners have successfully secured employment starting in Summer 2026. I am sure this number will continue to rise as near the end of the completion of their courses. These roles include positions in customer service, ramp operations, and opportunities with major organisations such as Jet2, Swissport and EasyJet, demonstrating the clear progression from classroom learning into meaningful employment within the travel and tourism sector.”</p><p><strong>One of the students, Chloe White, shared their experience:</strong></p><p>“I found the trip to Bristol Airport really interesting, it was good to see the different areas of the Airport. This helped me learn about the different roles at Bristol Airport and we were able to ask staff questions about their jobs. This helped me understand more about what it would be like to actually work there.</p><p>“After this trip through my course at college, I had the opportunity to interview for a job with Swissport to work at Bristol Airport. This was a massive opportunity as it was my first ever interview. The interview went well, and I was offered the job. I am looking forward to starting at Bristol Airport soon.”</p><p><strong>Harry Ellis, Corporate Affairs & Community Engagement Executive at Bristol Airport, said:</strong></p><p>“We’re proud to have worked closely with Weston College for a number of years to inspire and develop future aviation talent through meaningful, real-world experiences and visits at the airport.
