Applied Law, National Certificate
Applied Law is designed to provide you with an introduction to our legal system in a more practical way of learning. There is an emphasis on work-related learning, giving you an edge and opening the door to higher education or employment in legal or business sectors.
The course covers the key areas of core legal knowledge, whilst delving into the more specific areas of family and criminal law. You will learn about the roles of individuals in civil and criminal cases, the law regarding Negligence and the legal difference between murder and manslaughter.
This course not only equip you with a solid foundation of legal knowledge but also develop transferable skills such as case study research, teamwork and client communication.
WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE
BTEC Law includes 4 units which will be assessed both internally and externally across the 2-year course;

Unit 1: Dispute Solving in Civil Law. This unit is assessed via an external assessment which covers the civil court system, people who work in the system and the law relating to Negligence.

Unit 2: Investigating Aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System. This unit is assessed internally. It covers assault and battery, sentencing and the people involved in criminal cases.

Unit 3: Applying the Law. This unit is assessed via an external assessment which and covers areas such as homicide, property offences and Police Powers.

Unit 4: Aspects of Family This unit is assessed internally which covers different family relationships, breakdown of relationship and rights concerning finance and children.
You will have the opportunity to witness the law in action by visiting local magistrates’ courts, the Royal Courts of Justice, the Old Bailey, Supreme Court, and the Houses of Parliament. We also arrange for guest speakers to talk to you about their roles in the justice system.
This programme is part of a Sixth Form offer and is equivalent to one A Level. Therefore, you will need to choose a further two or three A Level subjects alongside this course to study over a two-year period. ASSESSMENT METHOD
This course is 58% external assessment and 42% coursework.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
You could apply to study law at university. You could progress onto other programmes at the College, including our Chartered Institute of Legal Executives programme, which allows you to qualify as a legal executive. You could also enter policing or social work.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including English and Maths.
