Engineering and Green Skills

STUDYING ENGINEERING & GREEN SKILLS AT WESTON COLLEGE

If you’re a creative problem-solver and looking for an exciting career, engineering will satisfy your curiosity and give you the challenge you crave. As an engineer, your future could be in an office, a laboratory, an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, or even in outer space.

As an engineer you can have a direct and positive impact on the planet. Green skills are engineers who are environmentally-conscious, you could be working on energy efficiency, renewable energy, electric vehicles, conservation, sustainability, waste reduction all with the aim to help with the impact of climate change.

Our programmes focus on giving you hands-on, practical experience and a sound understanding of the theory and principles behind everything you do. You’ll join a group of curious and creative minds to spend time researching, designing, building and testing new technologies and products.

With an average starting salary of £26,536– higher than most graduate careers – and a shortage of engineers in the UK, there’s never been a better time to kick-start your engineering career. The engineering sector is hugely diverse with dozens of different disciplines and sectors, so there’s a wide range of roles.

Whether it’s your dream to work for a larger international firm such as GKN, Airbus, Rolls Royce or you’d prefer to make a difference in a regional or smaller company, you’re sure to find a good match for you.

LATEST NEWS

Learners taking part in task aimed at building communication skills

Last Wednesday, we welcomed Hydrock to our South West Skills Campus, to inspire our T Level learners from Engineering and Civil Engineering.

Employer engagement and focussing on careers is a key part of our course delivery, with learners gaining insight from industry to enhance their learning experience.

Hydrock who are passionate about addressing global challenges through smart engineering solutions, delivered three engaging sessions to our learners, which focussed on sustainability, and also developing key soft skills required by employers.

The sessions included:

Future Communities – learners designed their own community

Soft Skills Development – several activities which aimed to develop communication, empathy and assertiveness

Career and CV Workshop

Dave LeFeuvre, Subject Area Manager for Building Services, said: “I would like to say a big thank you to Hydrock, who delivered some really creative activities for our learners, which got them thinking outside the box to tackle challenges. The learners have commented on how beneficial they found the experience.

“On the back of this session, several of our learners are now looking to complete their industry placement with Hydrock, which is fantastic news.

“At Weston College we feel it is important to connect our students with employers, to bring industry to life in the classroom.”

Engineer apprentice in factory

Engineering, as an industry, is so diverse and can be suited to so many people; it’s a huge combination of different sectors, including chemical, composite, civil and electrical engineering. When studying, you will have the opportunity to find out which aspect is your favourite, which is best suited to you, and which you’d most like to specialise in as you progress to higher levels.

As the industry is highly technical and is highly difficult to succeed in without substantial prior training, it can be financially beneficial to make up for it! The starting salary is higher than an average graduate, at around £26,000. As well as having the training and knowledge, you will also develop a huge number of transferable skills to have with you in the workplace, as well as in your personal life, including communication, leadership, and critical reasoning.

Another huge benefit of working in Engineering is its ever-changing nature, so where technology develops and evolves, it will be part of your job to pre-empt, adapt and learn about these new changes. This will result in a job that you’ll never get bored of!

By studying with us to gain your qualifications in Engineering, you’ll be able to find out about the Careers Excellence Hub, which will include many career-boosting benefits, as well as working alongside and hearing from huge names in the engineering industry, for example Airbus and GKN.

Plus, when studying with Weston College, the level you enter in won’t matter as we provide education for all levels, and in different formats. For example, if you would benefit and learn best from nearly all hands-on work, plus a wage, an <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/engin… would be ideal. However, if you felt some days looking at theory while in the classroom would be better suited, a <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/engin… Level could be the course for you. We want to help you find the best suited course for you!

There is also predicted to be a shortage of engineers by around 2026, meaning there is no better time to begin studying towards qualifying, as the shortage may be lessened by an influx of learners beginning to train now! Furthermore, as engineering is currently perceived much more as a male dominated career path, our goal is for that stereotype to be overwritten, and create more equality in the industry, eventually eradicating the idea that it’s male dominated.

T Level, Engineering

From September, we will welcome our first cohort of engineering T Level learners, into our Engineering Career Excellence Hub.

T Levels offer learners an alternative to A Levels and apprenticeships, with a real focus on work experience, as learners must complete a 45-day industry placement with a local employer.

The engineering T Level, offers both a practical and academic focus, providing learners with skills, knowledge and understanding of subjects such as design, project, maths, materials and manufacturing principles.

Employers across the country are recognising how important T Levels are going to be, especially in their plans for developing their future work force.

Leading engineering company, Belcan, has pledged their support to Weston College and T Levels, by committing to offering an industry placement to T Level learners.

Steve Beasley, Head of Repair Engineering at Belcan, said: “Our philosophy is to build an inclusive work environment to attract and retain talented people, encourage innovation, and inspire top performance from employees to achieve superior business results by putting people first.

“We’re excited to be supporting Weston College through their new engineering T Level, and provide opportunities to young people wanting to enter the exciting engineering industry.”

Dr Paul Phillips CBE, Principal and Chief Executive of Weston College Group, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Belcan, they are a forward-thinking company that are very keen on providing opportunities that are vital in developing the engineers of tomorrow.

“The new engineering T Level is going to be highly desirable for school leavers as the programme is built to be beneficial for both our learners and employer network, meaning we are all working together to get learners job-ready.”

You can find out more about the Engineering T Level, <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/engin…;
