Social Care, BTEC Extended Diploma
This Level 3 Social Care qualification has more focus on enabling you to achieve either higher education or employment. You will have two pathway options in year 2 – health care and social care. These allow you to take a tailored approach to your career and provide the best opportunities for progression. Year 1 of this qualification will provide you with the theoretical and practical underpinnings for your chosen industry pathway in year 2.
Studying this course means that you will also be part of our Health and Social Care Career Excellence Hub, which is endorsed by leading employers, who are actively involved throughout your whole training programme.
What does the course involve?
The two-year programme will develop your knowledge and practical skills in a wide range of industry subjects. Units include anatomy and physiology, development through the life stages, safe practice, research methods, dementia care, mental health, psychological perspectives, sociological perspectives and working with additional needs.
As part of this study programme, you will develop your maths, English, and digital skills, attend tutorials and Sim practical sessions. You will also complete industry work placements and build a vocational portfolio over the 2-year programme. This gives you the opportunity to gain your care certificate All aspects of your study programme will be discussed at your interview.
How will the course be assessed?
We’ll assess your coursework – which includes projects, assignments and presentations – and your practical activities both in college and at your industry placement. There are also four exams over the two years.
Are there any additional costs?
You will be required to purchase a polo shirt to wear every day whilst you are at college and either a scrub top or tunic to wear whilst in the SIM room and for placement. You will need flat black shoes and black trousers also for your professional SIM sessions and placement.
Course handbooks and revision guides are available to be purchased from the examining board.
This will all be discussed with you at interview.
What future study opportunities and careers are there?
This programme will enable you to progress to the degree in Integrated Mental Health and Social Care or Health and Social Care Practice at University Centre Weston. Or you can progress to university in either health or social care related fields, or gain employment in a variety of social areas, including youth work, family support worker, home care social worker, counselling, and personal care assistants.
