This gave them a real insight into the operational side of the airport and the variety of roles involved in ensuring smooth travel for thousands of passengers every day.

Students then got the opportunity to access the staff-only Aviation House, a behind-the-scenes area that most travellers never see. Here, learners discovered the coordination required between different departments, from security to ground handling, and learned about the skills and qualifications required for these roles.

Following this, the group attended a lesson in Lulsgate House, where airport staff delivered an engaging session on career pathways, progression opportunities, and the importance of customer service in the aviation industry.

One of the highlights of the day was visiting the roof deck, where students watched planes take off and land.
Former student, Ollie Haley, finished the <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin…, Management & Leadership T Level in September 2024, after completing his 8-week placement at Lloyds Banking Group. After the successful completion of his T Level, Ollie was offered a full-time apprenticeship as a Senior Financial Assistant at Lloyds Banking Group.

Before college, Ollie wished to go into the Royal Marines but decided to complete a college course so he would have something to fall back on if needed. Originally, Ollie was going to choose to do a Bricklaying apprenticeship course as a way to earn money while he studied, however the <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin… T Level caught his eye, so he decided to pursue that before starting the Royal Marines. After starting his <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin… Level placement at Lloyds Banking Group, he found an interest in insurance and finance and decided to continue his career in this field post <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin… Level when he was offered a full-time apprenticeship with Lloyds Banking Group.

He has almost completed his Level 4 apprenticeship and once finished, he will progress to his Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Level 7. After the successful completion of the Level 7 apprenticeship, he will become a full Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) and a Grade D Assistant Manager at Lloyds Banking Group.

As part of his apprenticeship, Ollie was given a range of tasks to complete, one of which being the role of monthly reconciliations which was previously an Assistant Manager’s responsibility. However, after working with the system, he concluded that it was too time-consuming to continue with the amount of manual input required, so decided to make changes. He removed a lot of the old system and increased the amount of automation using formulas which reduced the time spent on the task and freed up space for additional tasks and an increased workload.

Ollie’s use of initiative and resourcefulness meant that the efficiency of the monthly reconciliations was largely improved, impressing management and colleagues within his first year of the job. He is now preparing a Tier 2 subsidiary account and will be moving onto a Tier 1 subsidiary account later this year which will be the largest account he has been responsible for within his apprenticeship.

Due to the impact his <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin… Level had on his development and goals, Ollie wanted to mentor a current <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin… Level student on their Lloyds Banking Group placement. He convinced his manager to allow him to have the first T Level student to work in Insurance as opposed to Global Finance Support GFS where all other T Level students complete their placement. This was extremely successful, with his student doing an excellent job throughout her placement and providing her with new skills within finance and business management.

Ollie said, “I wouldn’t be where I am now without the T Level. I got my apprenticeship through my placement and haven’t looked back since – I wouldn’t change it for anything. I felt so supported throughout my placement by the staff at Weston College, especially from my lecturer, Emma Hussey. She helped me find what I enjoyed, and I realised that I’m really good at what I do. I’d recommend anyone considering the T Level to go for it, it’s given me so many more opportunities.”

Ollie recently returned to Weston College as a group mentor for the Business Enterprise Challenge, mentoring students with their brand and helping them create products to sell to raise money for Weston Hospicecare. He has also offered to deliver a Finance guest lecture to our current <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin…, Management & Leadership T Level students to share his journey, experiences and insight into working at a large corporation like Lloyds Banking Group.

Ollie is a fantastic reflection of what hard work and dedication can achieve. He thrived within his placement, and it paid off, getting acknowledged and praised by management which resulted in a full-time apprenticeship with guaranteed job security after completion. He has now been nominated for a Group Finance – Growth Mindset Award this year within Lloyds Banking Group, and if he is successfully shortlisted, he will be invited to attend the awards night in London.

A big thank you to Ollie for sharing his experiences and helping our current students with their T Level journey.

<a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin… you are interested in applying to one of our Business courses, click here.

Progress to the next level in <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.ucw.ac.uk/courses-by-subject/business-accounting-and-operat…;!
Recently, our Business, Management & Leadership T Level students have met a range of finance industry professionals through our Focus on Finance initiative. This programme connects learners with leading employers, providing valuable insights into the financial sector and helping them build the practical skills needed to succeed in their future careers.

Students attended an engaging workshop at KPMG’s Bristol offices which offered a first-hand look at the professional environment of a global firm. This allowed students to engage with employees from across the business, explore emerging technologies shaping the future of finance, and develop key transferable skills. The day was finished with a guided office tour, giving students a glimpse into the day-to-day life of working at a major financial services organisation.

Students also received a guest lecture from Anthony Carey and James Skuce from Lloyds Banking Group, who delivered an insightful session on the wide range of career opportunities available within the organisation. They highlighted the industry placement programme that has already taken on many successful Weston College students. Many of these former interns have since gone on to secure permanent roles with Lloyds Banking Group and are now working towards their CIMA qualifications. Last year’s group achieved outstanding results, winning the South West heat and placing third nationally in a Lloyds Banking Group’s competition. This was a testament to the hard work of our learners and the strength of our employer partnerships.

Our partnership with Lloyds Banking Group goes beyond student placements, with Weston College’s Business Curriculum Co-ordinator, Emma Hussey, attending the T Level Industry Insights Day at Lloyds’ Harbourside office in Bristol. Supported by Anthony Carey from Group Finance Support, the visit offered Emma a deeper understanding of the bank’s operations across multiple departments. A highlight was meeting former T Level students now employed at Lloyds, showcasing the real impact of employer engagement. Emma will now use these insights to help students connect classroom learning with real-world careers.

To continue the Focus on Finance initiative, Rob Rogers, Senior Manager of Customer Relations at the Bank of Ireland, visited the College to speak with students about his non-linear career journey into Finance. Rob emphasised the importance of adaptability, career planning, and continuous learning — qualities essential for success in the dynamic financial world. He also discussed the importance of professional behaviour in the workplace, encouraging students to always hold themselves with professionalism and kindness as connections can be formed in all aspects of life.

The Focus on Finance initiative continues to be at the core of Weston College’s Business T Level programme. Through partnerships with leading employers, our students are not only developing strong academic foundations but also gaining the confidence, professionalism, and hands-on experience required to succeed in the finance and administration sectors.

Thank you to Lloyds Banking Group, KPMG, and Rob Rogers for taking the time to visit our students and share your industry insight with them. This provides them with a broader understanding of a career in finance and the approaches that different organisations take within their systems.

This initiative forms part of the <a class="ProsemirrorEditor-link" href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/busin…; Careers Excellence Hub.
